The Appeal

The ‘Carrera’ badge carries a huge weight of history and significance. While its importance may have been diluted in modern-era Porsche model structures and used as shorthand for ‘base model’, that wasn’t always the case: in the early days, Porsche started gluing this badge onto 356s to celebrate their mighty prowess in the Carrera Panamericana, a race so uncompromising that even finishing in one piece was by no means a given.
Carrera was a badge of honour. And so it carried through to the 1980s, when a 911 was the pinnacle of road car supremacy. Sure, kids had posters of Ferrari F40s and Lamborghini Countachs on their bedroom walls, but they had 930 Turbos blu-tacked up there too, and the key difference was that this was an achievable supercar.

Forget your Italian trinkets with their inherent histrionics, the German alternative was a far better bet for everyday dream-weaving. And elsewhere in the model range we find this car, the 911 Carrera 3.2. It boasts every one of those aspirational 1980s ingredients – the Fuchs wheels, the whale-tail, the electric drop-top. It’s such an iconic form, it truly is the stuff that dreams are made of. Just like in period, a 1980s 911 today has the uncanny ability to make children gasp and grown-ups yearn.

And this particular example is a truly desirable one – offered for sale by an owner with a sizeable fleet of performance cars, this is a car with a robust history, everyday reliability, and a sought-after spec.

The History and Paperwork

  • Original books and manuals
  • Lots of stamps in the service book
  • MOT till August 2022
  • Recent invoice for tyres
  • Fuel system and electrics recently overhauled by Autofficina
  • Sheaf of old MOTs

The Interior

  • Tidy and complete trim
  • Upgraded audio with Blaupunkt head unit
  • Very good electric soft-top

This 911’s interior is complete, correct and in good order throughout. Indeed, the only deviation from standard spec is the modern head unit and speakers. The seats are in good condition front and rear, with the fronts both tilting correctly to allow access. Rear seatbelts are fitted. The gauges operate correctly, and the carpets are in good condition.

The electric windows raise and lower as they should, as does the electric soft-top – which is in very good condition with a nice clear window pane. It’s all dry and tidy inside the front boot, where we find the correct space-saver spare wheel, the tool roll, and the tonneau cover for the roof.

The Exterior

  • Desirable triple-black colour scheme
  • Period-correct staggered Fuchs wheels
  • Recent Continental tyres

The colour specification of this car is extremely sought-after, being triple-black: black paint, black interior, black wheels. And you can’t beat the combination of staggered Fuchs wheels and a whale-tail, can you?

The paint is decent throughout and all body panels appear straight and true with no obvious evidence of corrosion. The correct badging and trim is all in place, and all of the window glass and light lenses are in good order, save for a stone-chip in one of the headlights.

The faces of the period Fuchs wheels wear a gorgeous patina up close, gently crazed like antique ceramics, and they’re fitted with quality Continental tyres all round – the fronts having recently been replaced.

The Mechanicals

  • Strong and reliable drivetrain
  • Vivid performance
  • Strong brakes and supple suspension

It sounds like a 911, and you can be assured that it goes like a 911 too! The 3.2-litre flat-six is backed up by a robust service history, and we’re assured by the owner that it’s an extremely reliable thing, so much so that this car could readily be pressed into daily use if required: it starts on the first turn of the key, idles evenly, and pulls with the vigour you’d expect through the rev range.

The transmission is slick and precise, and there are no reported issues with the suspension, steering or brakes. A thoroughly enjoyable 911 to drive.

Summary

There’s a very clear reason for buying a 1980s Porsche 911 in 2022, and that is quite simply that it’s a dream come true. Anyone who grew up in the 1970s, ’80s or ’90s will have yearned for a whale-tail 911 at some point in their youth, that’s an inescapable fact. Of course, we’re under no illusions that this will be a frivolous purchase – whoever buys this car will do so because they most likely know a fair bit about 911s and will be on the lookout for a decent and honest one. And this car is a safe bet.

It’s got a decent history file, it has all the desirable spec, and aside from the aftermarket stereo it’s all original. A decent, high-quality, totally usable Carrera, ready to turn heads on the showground, tear up the local B-roads, bumble to the shops, or cruise down to the Riviera. If you want an ’80s Carrera, it’s right here waiting for you.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
