1990 Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI (Phase 1.5)

  • £9,300 restoration in 2015
  • Just 5,000 miles since restoration
  • Superb history file
  • Revvy 1.6-litre with 5-speed manual transmission
  • Upgraded half-leather interior from Phase 2 GTI

The Appeal

Often cited as the greatest ever hot-hatchback, the 205 GTI has become quite the legend. Both the sprightly 1.6 and the more torque-heavy but occasionally skittish 1.9 are now very collectible and often held up as the pinnacle of Peugeot’s heyday.

Of course, this iconic status means that great examples are few and far between, and many have been significantly modified over the years. So it is that we’re delighted to present this rather magnificent example for sale.

Fitted with the lighter and – some say – better to drive 1.6-litre powertrain, this handsome example was comprehensively restored, resprayed and mechanically refurbished in 2015. Having covered just about 5,000 miles since, it presents in excellent order with a comprehensive history file. It also benefits from an upgraded half-leather interior, sourced from a later ‘Phase 2’ car. In our opinion, all of this makes this delightful little hot-hatch a sure-fire winner. Frankly, you can’t let this one escape your clutches.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in August 1990
  • 14 owners from new, current owner since May 2021
  • Comprehensively restored in October 2015 at a cost of £9,300 by Retroclassica, when the car had covered 123,962 miles
  • 128,893 miles on the clock
  • Current MOT to April 2024
  • Comprehensive history from 1997 to 2014, rebuild invoices from 2015
  • Stamped service record for the first 10 years / 66,000 miles
  • Owner’s handbooks included
  • Kept as part of a private collection in a professional, climate-controlled facility for the last two years
  • Only being sold as the owner is leaving the country

The Interior

  • Upgraded, retrimmed ‘Phase 2’ half-leather interior installed during the restoration
  • The seats present in excellent condition, with no damage in evidence to the leather or fabric centre sections
  • Smart contrasting red carpeting, showing in good condition with minimal wear, complemented with branded floor mats
  • Dark grey headlining looks taut and secure, with no sagging, damage or staining we could see
  • Electric windows
  • Aftermarket gear knob
  • Modern Pioneer CD/radio system with USB and Aux connectivity
  • All of the internal trim and switchgear shows in fine fettle, the only issue we noted is that there is a small blanking plate missing on the passenger side armrest
  • We’re assured by the vendor that everything works as it should, and no faults are reported with the cabin’s functions and features
  • The boot space shows some staining to the side panels and underside of the parcel shelf, and features a branded floor mat

The Exterior

  • Resprayed in bright red in October 2015 – the paint unsurprisingly looks to be in very good order, with no notable marks or damage apparent
  • The bodywork shows well, with clean lines and crisp finishes to the panels
  • All of the plastic trim and badging appears to be present and correct and shows no evidence of UV damage or fading – the black plastics still have a deep sheen to them
  • Desirable “no sunroof” model
  • Integrated front fog lights
  • The underside looks straight and solid, with no obvious corrosion or damage on show, while a spare wheel is mounted underneath the boot floor
  • 15-inch Speedline alloy wheels from a 1.9 GTI, appearing to be in excellent condition and shod in a matched set of Michelin Pilotsport 5 tyres that look as if they have had very little use
  • Original set of 1.6 GTI ‘pepperpot’ Speedline alloys wheels also included, in fine condition

The Mechanics

  • 1,580cc four-cylinder, fuel-injected engine
  • Engine fully rebuilt and blueprinted in October 2015, c.5,000 miles ago
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • Front-wheel drive
  • ‘Fly-off’ handbrake installed
  • Front strut brace
  • Lovely, clean engine bay
  • The vendor tells us that the car drives “perfectly” and reports no faults or issues

What could be more perfect as a daily classic than a well-sorted Peugeot 205 GTI? Not much, we reckon. And this one looks to have been very well restored and has been kept in excellent order since. For anyone that loves the feel of a classic hot-hatch, it just doesn’t get much better than this…

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
