1992 Mercedes-Benz 230CE

  • Highly original pillarless coupe
  • 2.3L M102 powerplant with 4-speed automatic transmission
  • In current ownership since 1996
  • In recent years has strictly been a Sunday driver
  • Stored in the garage for around four years

The Appeal

Introduced in 1984, the W124 platform has become one of the most respected parts of Mercedes-Benz’ repertoire. These were a comfortable, well-equipped and immensely durable, often labelled with such fantastical labels as ‘indestructible’ and ‘bulletproof’ - while we can’t quite promote that line of thinking, we can say they’re a roomy, swift and highly durable example of Mercedes-Benz at their best.

This example has been in its current ownership since 1996, and has spent the past four years kept in dry storage. It’s now ready and waiting to be returned to the road, and will no doubt prove to be a very capable daily driver.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1992
  • Originally used as an Issac Agnew demo vehicle
  • Only one previous owner
  • The DVLA records current ownership as beginning in 1996
  • The car has most recently had both front wings replaced and a respray
  • The chassis has also experienced some welding
  • The car currently indicates 151,714 miles
  • The vendor informs us that the car has a complete service history
  • The paperwork file we can see includes:
    • Registration book (v5 document)
    • A pair of tax discs
    • A selection of handbooks and manuals
    • Original guarantee documents

The Interior

  • Original grey fabric interior
  • Seats are largely well presented with light wear throughout
  • The driver’s seat has a decent-sized hole in the right-hand bolster
  • The door cards are clean with some wear to the vinyl
  • Some holes and pock-marks to the interior door handles
  • The car boasts an extended walnut trim which is in good order
  • The dashboard is clean and well-kept with original instruments
  • We’ve been informed that one of the window motors needs attention
  • The carpets and headlining are in fair order with light age-commensurate wear
  • The sunroof is showing no signs of water ingress
  • Some perishing to the door rubbers
  • The boot is in good order with a spare wheel
  • Original mats and toolkit

The Exterior

  • Impressive blue-grey metallic paintwork with chrome trims
  • Resprayed fairly recently in the car’s life
  • The car has also been fitted with fresh wings
  • Chroemwork in good order with some patina
  • The bodywork looks in good order with some light areas of blistering
  • We can’t spot any obvious dents or dings
  • Glasswork and lenses are free of cracks or fractures
  • The car is sat on its original alloys, which could do with some work
  • Shod in a full set of Constancy tyres, which look to be in good order
  • Underneath, the car shows signs of a weld and some areas of corrosion
  • However, this isn’t perforating and it still looks in solid condition

The Mechanics

  • 2.3L M102 powerplant
  • 4-speed automatic transmission
  • The engine bay is in fair order with some areas of surface corrosion
  • The car has spent around four years in storage and may need some commissioning work
  • However, we’ve not been informed of any significant mechanical faults

A good, solid example of an excellent 90s car, this 230CE is a great opportunity to take on one of Mercedes-Benz's best-loved coupes.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
