The Background

Moving convertibles into the 21st century with some of the most advanced electronics of the day, the R129 was certainly a car for the person that wanted something sporty and luxurious.

Launched in 1989 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz R129 was based on a shortened floorpan of the W124. The SL featured some innovative designs for the time, including the hidden away roll over bar and the optional Adaptive Damping System, making it one of the safest vehicles made at the time.

The History

There is little known about the previous keepers. There are plenty of invoices, and it has been converted to run on LPG in 2008 by a certified installer. This is reported to work as it should.

Running on LPG definitely has its benefits, one of which makes running the 3.0 litre a little lighter on the pocket.

The Paperwork

The V5 is present and shows there have been 6 previous keepers. There are 2 sets of keys present. The Mercedes comes with an extensive history file to give the new keeper some background on the car.
The MOT on the 300SL is valid until 29th July 2022.

The Interior

Inside the Mercedes, the light grey leather seats are in very good condition with no excessive wear to them, other than a few age related creases. The door cards are also in very good order with no damage to be seen. The small rear seat is in excellent condition with no real signs of being used much throughout its life.
The dashboard is finished in grey and has no cracks to the top. The instrument binnacle is reported to be working as it should, with the odometer showing 95,440 miles. The heater controls and switchgear are all in nice condition with minimal wear to the lettering on the buttons.
The carpets are nice and clean throughout, as is the headlining for the hard top. Into the boot and this is just as clean. There is the warning triangle present and also the tool kit roll. Another nice extra not often seen is the fold up stand that lives in the boot for the detachable hardtop.

The Exterior

The SL is finished in Nautic Blue Metallic which has a deep lusture to it and looks stunning. It has been repainted to freshen it up a little a number of years ago, but is still looking quite fresh.
There are the usual odd stone chips here and there to mention, but nothing that you wouldn’t expect on a used car.
The headlights, indicators and fog lights are free from any cracks, and the bonnet looks to align as it should with the wings and grille. The usual problem areas, such as the front of the wheel arch on the wings, look to be free from any signs of corrosion.
Moving down the flanks of the car, and it looks to be dent and dink free, making it look nice and straight. The windows look to be free from any heavy scratches and the trims are in good condition. The LPG fill up point is located in the nearside rear bumper, which is colour coded for a discrete finish.

The hard top is removable, not quite the stage of a fully collapsible hardtop just yet, but once removed and placed on the included stand, you can put up the Mohair roof at the touch of a button, which is working correctly and closes up nice and tight. The roof itself is in excellent condition with the plastic windows nice and clear, and there is no noticeable heavy creasing to the roof.
Around to the rear, and the classic Mercedes-Benz style light lenses have no splits or cracks. The Mercedes badge is present and there are no scuffs to the bumper. The boot lid lines up as it should, and the removal of the SL300 badge gives the rear end a nice clean look.
The wheels have been refurbished and are in excellent condition, with no tarnishing or scuffs to be seen. Fitted with Dunlop tyres, these are in good condition with plenty of miles for the new keeper.

The Mechanics

Fitted with the Mercedes-Benz 3.0 litre, the car starts up just as you would expect, and is reported to sound just as it should with no untoward noises to be heard. A well documented history has ensured the SL has been well cared for throughout its 6 keepers.
The automatic change is nice and smooth as it glides through the gears, with no strange noises coming from the gearbox or drivetrain. The brakes are reported to be working well with no juddering or pulling to either side when applying the brake, bringing the car to a halt nice and safely.

The Appeal

Straight out of the 90’s, this SL300 is very well presented, helped along by the wonderful colour combination of the light grey interior and the striking Nautic Blue Metallic exterior. It’s topped off with a nice LPG conversion making running the 3.0 much more economical.
A large history file would suggest it’s been a well cared for car from the beginning by it’s previous keepers, and now the SL is looking for a new custodian, will you be the one?

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
