1993 Jaguar XJS 4.0 Coupe

Highlights

• Original throughout
• Brilliant history
• Excellent Bodywork

The Background

The newer AJ16 4.0 litre straight-six engine found its way under the bonnet of the XJS after a refresh was ordered and the V12 shunned in favour of the powerplant that was to be fitted to the new XJ saloon of the day. The benefits of improved reliability and strong performance had the desired result, bringing in more buyers to the XJS as it approached its 20th year of production.

The XJS also benefitted from a new gearbox married up to its new straight-six engine, again lifted from the incoming XJ saloon of the time. This gave buyers the potential to grab an icon with looks that charmed, but with a driving experience that gave the XJS a new character. The lighter nose could turn faster and with improved efficiency it could go further without stopping, making this car not just an excellent GT, but one that could take on a twisty road with vigour along the way.

The History

It was a car that the current owner had always wanted and last year after being pointed in the direction of a particularly nice example, he swept up it up. The stacks of paperwork have the reassuring repeat invoices from the same garages.

The Jaguar has clearly been loved by every single one of its previous caretakers and the present custodian has the same feeling that such a lovely car needs to be taken care of.

After enjoying it for several long trips to the south of the country he hopes that it will find another good home to keep this example shining into the future.

The Paperwork

Last year before the purchase was made of L463 OFM a full AA inspection was done, which it passed. Looking back there are stacks of invoices accompanying the service book, these roll year after year with the same garages.

Names that any Jaguar enthusiast will notice such as Guy Salmon Jaguar, Nene Jaguar Specialists and Clarke’s Jaguar can be found among others in the paperwork.

Delightfully there is a handwritten list of work that a previous owner felt important to draw future owners attention to. This includes improvements to standard parts or important service work that is noted down to leave no doubt whether it was done.

The Interior

Slip yourself behind the wheel and into a seat that still has the big GT bear hug of a comfortable but supportive perch. Everything inside showed itself to be in excellent condition with the only minor wear to the leather, all commensurate with age, but certainly in better shape than many vehicles that have travelled this many miles.

A look onto the door cards showed nothing broken or sagging and in the boot the carpet was clean without any signs of damp or staining. The vendor commented that anyone that has worked on the car has told him it is in very good condition and it doesn’t take long swivelling your head around the inside to see exactly what they mean. After a thorough search, a crack in the corner of the plastic binnacle for the dials was noticed, it hasn’t gotten any worse in the last year and is in the bottom left corner so doesn’t disturb the view of the dials behind it.

The Exterior

A truly stunning vehicle both when the sun ran along the styled lines of the exterior and when the clouds came overhead. The condition is to the merit of all the previous owners of this car, it has clearly been loved by each and every one of them, a legacy that the vendor hopes will continue with whoever comes to take this cherished example to a new home.

The vehicle is dry stored most of the time in an underground car park with a car cover over the top of it. A very critical eye was needed to find any flaws with the vehicle, such is the excellent condition, there were a few stone chips and the chrome lens around one of the near side lens had began to degrade on one side, apart from this there is little to report.

The Mechanics

Open up the bonnet, stick your head in the wheel arches and stare at the brakes, all appear in fine condition and nothing untoward was reported when the car was serviced last December, just 3,000 miles ago.

All six cylinders leapt into action, as any healthy AJ16 should, and idled smoothly as well as working its way through the gears effortlessly. It sounded in fine health and as ready for a trip to the supermarket as it is to drive the length of the nation. The owner did want to point out that he had previously heard a slight noise from the exhaust that didn’t sound right to his ear, but a check at a local garage reported no issue, even so, he wanted this mentioned for transparency.

The Appeal

The market for a clean XJS seems to be ever growing, and sellers ever shrinking in number.

The short production window of the 4.0 litre AJ16 means that those that want to tuck away the sleek lines of a six-cylinder XJS in their garage are finding fewer to choose from and sellers are becoming more reluctant to let go.

Finding one in such clean condition is only going to get tougher in the time ahead, pounce like Jaguar today and bring this one home.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
