1995 TVR Chimaera 400 Convertible

THE APPEAL
Launched in 1992, the TVR Chimaera is the big brother to the earlier Griffith. Using the same backbone chassis as the Griffith, the Chimaera was designed to be more of a long-distance tourer. Being slightly longer than the Griffith, there was more storage space, and slightly softer suspension made it the perfect two-seater sports car with enough room for a weekend getaway or even to be used easily on a daily basis.
This 1995 model has been with the vendor for the past ten years. During his time with the TVR, it has been used for the short commute to work in the summer months, meaning it has had regular use, and as we all know, this is a good thing for any classic. Looking through the paperwork, there is a healthy number of service stamps and invoices for work carried out over the years.
This is an excellent opportunity for anyone wanting to enjoy a two-seater British sports car, and to experience the fantastic sound from the wonderful V8 powerhouse.

THE INTERIOR

- The instruments are reported to be working correctly
- The odometer shows a reading of 100,768 miles. This has been replaced and is approximately 16,999 less than it reads.
- The original dash fascia veneer has been removed and painted in satin black
- Immobiliser fitted
- Sony Bluetooth CD head unit
- Electric windows are working
- The seats do have some age related creasing and slight cracking to the leather
- Red carpets have faded
- Electric mirrors don’t work; this is said to be because of the switch
- Carbon fibre roof panel is in good condition
- Boot area is clean and tidy, with the space-saver spare wheel present
THE EXTERIOR
- Finished in Cherry Pearl
- Presents well
- Bonnet, doors and boot have a matching panel gap
- Headlights are free from any cracks
- Rear lights are free from damage but do have some condensation between the light and outer cover
- The roof section is in good condition, with just a small split in the plastic window
- Badges are in good order
- The front end was repainted last year after someone reversed into it on a car park. The vendor reports there was very minor damage
- There is some lacquer peel on the quarter panel where it meets the boot lid
- A small amount of micro blistering is present on the off-side quarter
- The windows look to be free from any excessive scratches
- There is some slight delamination clouding to the windscreen
- The wheels are in good order with no corrosion to the faces; there are some small age related marks
- The tyres have a good amount of tread remaining
THE MECHANICS
- 4.0 litre V8, it is reported by the vendor to be an HC engine due to it having double valve springs
- Five-speed manual
- Power steering
- Stainless steel outriggers fitted by the previous keeper
- Discs and pads were replaced approximately 4,000 miles ago
- New Gaz shock absorbers fitted approximately 4,000 miles ago
- Service was carried out around 200 miles ago
- The radiator has recently been replaced
- The TVR starts as you would expect
- No running issues are reported from the vendor
- The vendor reports the car to have a smooth gear change.
- The V8 pulls strongly through the gears and sounds fantastic
- Cross-drilled and grooved discs ensure the TVR comes to a halt quickly and smoothly
SUMMARY
The grand tourer from TVR is a superb way of getting into classic sports car ownership. Capable of being used regularly, the Chimaera is a great car to live with and one which will bring enjoyment, especially when you get it out on the open road and hear the sound of the V8 rumble.
Some small cosmetic improvements could be made inside the TVR, but isn’t tinkering part of the fun of owning any classic car?
