1997 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 (R129)

*** Interested parties should note, this vehicle was subject to a CAT D insurance loss in 12/2008 ***

Highlights

  • Low mileage V8 flagship R129
  • Factory hardtop
  • Superb order inside and out
  • Rare colour scheme

The Appeal

Introduced in 1989, the R129 generation of Mercedes-Benz SL was a major evolution for the brand, bringing new standards of technology and luxury to the sports car market, along with a much-lauded safety innovation in the form of its pop-up rollover hoop.
The breath-taking styling was the work of Mercedes stalwart Bruno Sacco, his final design of a 40-year career with company. It looked magnificent then and still looks magnificent today. Yet it had plenty more going for it than just looks – it was a wonderfully luxurious grand tourer, powerful yet relaxing to drive.
This example is a 1997 car, one of the first facelift models - and is absolutely stunning to behold in rare Signal Red with Parchment leather trim.
It’s a lovely example of an original R129 with the best engine – the 5.0-litre V8 - and is a Mercedes-Benz model that is on a rapid trajectory to becoming an even more valuable classic, following in the tracks of the earlier R107 and Pagoda models as an ideal tip for future investment.
It’s in stunning condition inside and out and comes with the desirable option of a factory hardtop.

The History and Paperwork

  • UK V5C
  • MOT June 2025
  • Genuine low mileage car
  • Four owners from new
  • Excellent MOT history
  • Regarding the CAT D insurance write off, it was believed to be for a small rear end collision in 2008, of which the Mercedes specialists who worked on the car for me said there is no sign. (It is a non structural write off, simply deemed uneconomical to repair)

The Condition

  • Original Signal Red paint in excellent condition – no signs of corrosion, dents or damage
  • Factory 16-inch alloy wheels in very good order with no kerb marks
  • Factory hardtop
  • Excellent light units, badges and trim
  • Superb Parchment leather upholstery
  • Wood veneer inlays
  • Minimal seat wear and good side bolsters
  • Some damage to top of driver’s seat/seat belt holder
  • Original Mercedes-Benz stereo
  • Air conditioning
  • Electric seat adjustment
  • Excellent door cards and carpets
  • Cruise control
  • Hardtop headlining has rippled
  • The vendor reports that the soft-top roof does work and is in good order, however the plastic windows are somewhat creased, and there is one very small split

The Mechanics

  • 5.0-litre 32v quad cam V8
  • Five-speed automatic
  • 326bhp
  • 0-60mph in 6.8 secs
  • Reported by vendor to drive very well with no reported faults or issues
  • Appears to be in good mechanical order and held good oil pressure and a steady temperature during our photos
