1998 Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG

Highlights

• New gearbox less than 250km ago
• Low production numbers - rare!
• Minimal mileage in recent years
• German registered

The Background

Launched in 1997, the C43 AMG - built upon the W202 sedan platform) took over the mantle as the flagship car in the C-Class family, and won the hearts and minds of enthusiasts (and criminals) alike, thanks to its 4.3-litre, naturally aspirated V8 producing 306 bhp.

Interestingly, it was also the first AMG car to be assembled in its entirety by Mercedes-Benz, whereas the proceeded C36 AMG was sold prior to AMG’s acquisition by Daimler-Benz in 1998.

In total, only 4,200 C43s were produced during the short production run between the end of 1997 and spring 2000, making it one of the rarer cars to wear the AMG badge with pride.

The History

This particular C43 AMG was first registered in 1998, finished in Obsidian Black over an Anthracite leather interior, and was strongly specified from the factory with the following options, among others:

·         197U OBSIDIANSCHWARZ - METALLIC BLACK
·         221 Driver and passenger seat electrically adjustable
·         249 Interior mirror with automatic anti-dazzle mode
·         345 Windshield wipers with rain sensor
·         351 Auto Pilot System (APS)
·         472 Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
·         581 Automatic air conditioning
·         584 Power windows (4 or 6 windows)
·         612 Headlight unit Xenon bulbs
·         772 AMG optical package - front spoiler, side skirts and rear skirt
·         774 ROHBAU-AENDERUNG FUER AMG-RAEDER
·         819 CD changer for 6 CDs
·         873 Seat heating left and right front
·         956 AUSSTATTUNGSPAKET SPORT

Not a great deal is known about the car’s early history, but our vendor purchased the car from the German Police (yes, really) in 2018, with the story going that the car was seized a number of years earlier in criminal activity, and then registered to the Police for undercover work.

At the time, the car’s transmission was inoperable, so - following the purchase - our vendor fitted a new unit less than 250km ago, had the car serviced, and it has largely stood idle since then, waiting for its next owner to enjoy.

The Paperwork

Included with the car are two sets of keys, the full complement of Mercedes-Benz handbooks, German registration documents, a partially stamped service history and the most recent TUV test certificate, which showed no advisories but expired in August 2019.

The Interior

The anthracite leather interior with wooden inlays is every inch the classy AMG experience, and this example presents in fantastic condition throughout.

Both front seats are free from heavy wear and have seemingly stood the test of time very well indeed, with only a couple of light scratches noted on the base of the passenger seat, along with some typical creases on all of the seats from regular use, but far less than we’d expect from this mileage.

Similarly, the wood trim all looks to be in great shape as far as we can see, as do the headliner, carpets and door cards with no sagging or heavy wear shown.

The vendor reports no known faults with any of the interior systems, switches or dials.

The Exterior

On the outside, the Obsidian Black paintwork presents wonderfully well for its age and mileage, and is a testament to both the care the car has seemingly enjoyed (despite its somewhat unusual circumstances) and the quality of the paint used by M-B at the time.

Looking at the photographs, we can see no signs of any impact damage, heavy wear or noticeable marks to the bodywork, and our vendor reports that the panels are straight and true throughout, with “no rust, scratches or dents” to speak of - excellent news.

Similarly, all four wheels are free from kerb damage, and are in excellent condition, though the tyres would likely benefit from replacement, simply due to being sat in one spot for an extended period of time.

The Mechanics

Under the hood, the 4.3-litre, naturally aspirated V8 engine is reportedly in rude mechanical health, and benefits from recent (mileage-based) servicing and minimal use since. The new transmission (fitted in 2018) is also in full working order, and our vendor reports no issues, leaks or untoward behaviour.

The Appeal

Already a staggeringly cool executive muscle car, the C43 AMG also represents a major moment in the history of both Mercedes-Benz and AMG, being the first car produced entirely in-house post-merger - a true landmark car.

This particular 1998-registered example benefits from recent servicing, a new transmission and minimal use, not to mention a fantastic back-story that would be the envy of many enthusiasts - not to be missed!

Making a secure purchase on Car & Classic Auctions

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 5-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000+ £500.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
