The Appeal

The Land Rover Defender is without a doubt one of the most iconic British vehicles ever produced. Known for its dependability, practicality, and no-frills construction, the Defender is highly popular amongst those looking for a practical workhorse, capable off-roader, or base for an overlanding build.
This particular Defender 90 is a fantastic example of the highly praised platform, boasting the desirable TD5 powerplant, and now showing just 46k on the clock. It’s also in excellent condition both inside and out, and has been very well maintained over the years.

If you’re looking for a well-cared-for, low-mileage Defender 90, very few will come close to this example.

The History and Paperwork

  • Well maintained
  • Low mileage example
  • 7 previous keepers
  • MOT until January 2023
  • V5C document present
  • 2 sets of keys
This Defender is offered today with a rather remarkable 46k on the clock, with 7 former keepers. This low mileage is supported by the previous MOT history, which is available both online and within the included past certificates.
Included alongside previous MOT certificates, is the V5C document, 2 sets of keys, and a collection of previous invoices. These invoices detail key maintenance and repairs over the years, such as a new clutch, fuel filter, chassis welding, regular servicing, a Scorpion alarm kit, and much more.

The current private reg plate "85 SP" is not included in the sale and the vehicle will be sold with its original plate "T710 APS"

The Interior

  • Partially re-trimmed
  • 3-spoke Moto-Lita steering wheel
  • Great condition
The interior of this low-mileage Land Rover is in great condition for its age, and benefits from previous seat repairs, and covers. That being said, there are of course minor signs of age and wear to expect, particularly with the seats.
Whilst the driver’s seat seemingly shows only minimal signs of wear, both the middle seat and front passenger seat appear to show more significant discolouration, along with a small hole in the passenger’s seat. The benches in the rear reflect a similar condition, although any discolouration could likely be alleviated with a bit of elbow grease and TLC.

Carpeting throughout the vehicle seemingly follows suit, and would no doubt benefit from a  good wet vac to remove any minor marking. The headliner and door cards aren’t too dissimilar, having been preserved rather well for their age, with only a few marks and minor signs of wear to be observed.

Facing forwards, you’re treated to a snazzy 3-spoke Moto-Lita steering wheel, and a JVC head unit tucked neatly in the centre console. Surrounding controls and the dashboard are in great condition, with only the expected signs of age and wear to note.
Overall, the interior of this Defender is certainly in keeping with what you’d perhaps expect from a now 23-year-old, utility vehicle. Sure there are minor signs of wear to note, but the practicality and blissful simplicity far outweigh any minor blemishes.

The Exterior

  • Original white finish
  • Side decals
  • Excellent condition
  • 16” 5-spokes
This Defender is believed to show off its original finish, without the need for major body restoration in the past. With this being a 1999 model, it is highly likely that the side decals were retrofitted by a previous owner, although they may very well be some of the last factory-fitted decals.
As the images reflect, the vehicle’s exterior has seemingly stood the rest of time, and looks great for its age. Upon close inspection, however, you will notice minor surface bubbling around the exterior, along with instances of small surface corrosion, and the expected marks from use.
That being said, what’s a Land Rover without a dash of patina and a few characterful blemishes?
To complement the factory paintwork, a previous owner has fitted this Defender with a bullbar, set of front spotlights, snorkel, side steps and chequer plate detailing. These modifications are quite subtle and give this Land Rover just a touch more character. These additions do show minor signs of age, but hardly anything that detracts from the overall charm.
Rather quirkily, this Defender also appears to sit on a set of 5-spokes from its sibling, the Discovery. Although not standard, this proves to be a common swap and actually looks brilliant against the Defender’s boxier shape. The wheels are in great condition for their age, with only a few minor marks and instances of curbing. As an added bonus, all 4 fitted wheels come fitted in a matching set of Toyo A/T tyres with plenty of tread to enjoy.

The Mechanics

  • 2.5L TD5
  • Manual 5-speed
  • Drives brilliantly
  • Well maintained
  • Low mileage
  • Long MOT
  • New clutch in 2015
The TD5 fitted to this Defender is often regarded by enthusiasts as a very capable, reliable powerplant, provided it is well maintained of course. Buyers will be pleased to know that as a result of this Land Rover’s excellent maintenance record, the vehicle fires up right away and performs without fault, proving to be a very dependable example.
As previous invoices note, the vehicle has been treated to an assortment of new parts and consumables over the years, including a new clutch in 2015 and a new clutch master and slave cylinder in 2010.
In recent years, the vehicle has required very little other than regular servicing, and various chassis repairs. 2017 saw a cross-member repair, while a 2019 invoice details repairs to the offside chassis. The vehicle then received welding to the nearside of the chassis in March 2022, and has since been given a clean bill of health.
This Defender now presents itself with no known faults, and is ready to be enjoyed by the next lucky keeper.

Summary

This Defender 90 presents a fantastic chance to own a very low mileage example of one of the most sought-after Land Rovers of all time. Fitted with the trusty TD5 lump and with excellent maintenance history and MOT until next year, this Defender is now ready to be enjoyed on the road, with no known faults to note.
Whether you’re looking for your next project, or simply seek a dependable workhorse, this 1999 Defender 90 is a superb choice.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
