The Appeal

One of the darlings of ‘the Playstation Generation’ of petrolheads, in the UK the Evo VI was made famous by Gran Turismo in the digital world and Tommi Mäkinen in the real world. A true motorsport and tuning legend, it remains an iconic 90s performance car.

This example was imported in June 2021 and is a fine example of a very original Evo VI GSR, presented in good condition with some sought-after factory options.

This Lancer is in very original condition inside. The only modifications that have been made are the addition of a Greddy Turbo Timer (always a wise move anyway), and a grippier Nardi steering wheel. As the original wheel, including the airbag, comes with the car this can soon be put back to full factory specifications, should the new owner so desire.

Looking at the deeply-bolstered blue and grey Recaro seats, it’s clear to see these are the originals. There are some marks and blemishes commensurate with the car’s age and mileage, but nothing too severe. There’s more wear to the driver’s seat outer bolster and squab, but as far as we could see there are no tears to the material. 

Similarly, the carpets and headlining look in good condition, if in need of a good clean. The carpets are dark grey and don’t appear to have any notable damage or staining. There are a few marks to the headlining, but it is secure and tight and looks to be undamaged.

The door cards feature complementary material panels, these are suffering with the usual sagging (a common issue with these cars) and the rear passenger side panel has come away from the door card a little. These are all relatively simple fixes though, and in no way harm enjoyment of the car.

All of the driving controls and switchgear look to be in fine order, legible and free from notable damage. There are some scuffs and marks to the plastics and trim around the cabin, but these are all minor in nature.

One thing to note with this particular Evo is the factory-fitted gauge cluster beneath the stereo. These are a rare factory option and give the car a boost gauge, water temperature gauge and volt-meter. Very useful additions for any turbocharged performance car.

We’re informed by the owner that everything in the cabin works perfectly, with no faults or issues that they are aware of. Overall, we would say that the cabin is in good, unrestored condition.

We think that the Evo VI strikes just the right tone with its aesthetics - clearly sporting and rally-derived, but not as ‘in your face’ as some more recent Japanese performance machines.

The paintwork and bodywork is believed to be completely original, and certainly appears to be so. It presents well, with a few blemishes and chips here and there, but largely in good condition. So too, the external trim and bodykit elements all look to be present and correct, with new genuine Mitsubishi rubber rear arch seals having been fitted by the vendor (original items can suffer from UV damage). Also sourced by the vendor are the front spotlight covers, genuine Mitsubishi items which are another sought-after factory option.

We noticed what appears to be some surface corrosion on the inner door lips, the rim of the boot aperture and the spare wheel well, but it appears to be minor and something that could be easily fixed.

The wheels are the original 17” OZ Superturismo alloys, here finished in a fetching bronze. The owner has recently sourced new centre-caps for them from Mitsubishi. They present well, with a few minor blemishes and scratches, but nothing that would concern us. They’re shod in Michelin Pilotsport tyres, which appear to have reasonable tread on them.

Underneath the car looks very well indeed. Clean and tidy, with no evidence of corrosion, damage or significant repair that we could observe.

The Mechanics

Pushing a mighty 276bhp and 373Nm to all four wheels through a manual 5-speed transmission, the Evo VI GSR is certainly no slouch. The advanced AYC system keeps everything pointed in the right direction, enabling drivers of all skill levels to enjoy the car’s superb handling characteristics and performance.

The engine bay itself is nice and clean, with no signs of any modifications. We also saw no evidence of leaks, overheating or poor repairs.

We’re assured by the owner that the car drives very well, having an excellent turn of pace, great handling and confidence-inspiring brakes. With a recent cam belt change too, buyers really can trust that this Lancer is in good mechanical order.


Presented in fine, largely original condition, with a fresh cam belt and some desirable factory options, this Evo VI would make a wonderful daily performance machine. With a little work in the cabin, it could soon be a very fine example of the breed indeed. We love the fact it hasn’t been modified, allowing the new owner to experience the car just as Mitsubishi intended.

If you’ve always wanted to live out your Gran Turismo or Mäkinen fantasies, this is the perfect place to start.
