The Appeal

Remember the “Lunchbox” Cherokee?
These were a great vehicle in their day and much like Range Rovers of a similar vintage, the Jeep XJ Cherokee is fast becoming a modern classic. It was the first American 4x4 to feature monocoque construction - something it achieved with a clever ladder chassis as part of the body shell. The XJ made for a wonderful tow vehicle and excelled off-road while offering one of the most comfortable cabins in its class.
Here we have an unusually low mileage example that’s been in the same family since it was just five years old. It’s the capable 2.5-litre Turbo Diesel with a five-speed manual gearbox. Acquired by the vendor’s late father in 2005, the Jeep covered just 36,000 miles. He was a biker, so preferred to spend their time on two wheels whenever possible and also a mechanic. That meant the Cherokee was well-looked after, receiving any maintenance it needed.
The vendor offers the Jeep with a long MOT. Whether you’re simply in need of a great SUV or fancy preserving this increasingly sought-after modern classic, this XJ Cherokee is mightily appealing.

I have one of these in Australia, although mine was not well maintained by previous owners and needed quite a bit of work to bring back to it's best. I've got 2 'full size' Jeep Cherokees, and was told these diesel ones had reliability issues, and the engines were grenades if overheated. Nothing could be further from the truth, but I've rebuilt the cooling system, and am careful to not overheat it. I've run it all over the place, including sand tracks in hot weather, and towing heavy loads on my steep rough driveway (property track about a km long). It's never hiccuped, or flinched since I got it sorted, it starts instantly in any weather, I get about 250 km out of 18 litres (1/4 tank) on the highway, and it's just about to turn over 400,000km. It accelerates rapidly in any gear once it gets the turbo on boost at 1,600 rpm. Don't listen to the scuttlebut, these are brilliant when maintained and looked after properly, and driven appropriately.
