The Appeal
Back in the early 2000s, Renault were king of the hot hatches and their nimble handling Clio was one of the ultimate track day weapons (and still dominates its class at sprints and hillclimbs). The recipe was simple – fit a lightweight and compact hatchback with a tuned 2.0-litre engine and add razor sharp handling. The Phase 1 Clio 172 launched in the spring of 2000 and featured a 170bhp (172PS) 1998cc 16-valve engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The updated Phase 2 172 came out in June 2001 and boasted a stiffened chassis, 16-inch alloys, Xenon headlights and climate control (rather than the air-con of the previous model). The Cup model arrived in August 2002 and was the most hardcore Clio 172 version with even stiffer suspension and a paired back spec that deleted Xenons, air con and ABS to give a 99kh saving in weight for an even better power-to-weight ratio. It was only offered in Iceberg Silver or Mondial Blue.
This particular car has been extensively overhauled by the previous owner with some sensible upgrades to make it more fun on track days. It comes with paperwork to show all the work done and produced 196bhp on a rolling road in November 2018. With a comprehensive service at Renault specialists Diamond Motors in August 2023 – including the all-important timing belt, tensioner and dephaser renewal - it’s all ready to be enjoyed on a sweeping A-road or your local track.

Summary
It’s hard to imagine a more engaging hot hatch than the Renault Clio 172 and the 2.0-litre 16V normally aspirated engines are a delight to drive. This one is no exception and comes with the all-important Cup chassis and a 196bhp engine upgrade to make it even more fun. With a recent timing belt service it’s just begging to be flung into a corner on your favourite stretch of tarmac.
