The Appeal
To understand why fans of JDM cars will get a bit hot-and-bothered about this Civic, you need to understand two things – what it is and what “Spoon” is.
First, this is an FD2 Type-R, the performance version of the Civic saloon and only ever available in Japan. With a powerful 225hp iVTEC engine and a factory-fitted limited-slip differential, it offers truly great performance from its compact form.
Secondly, Spoon Sports are widely acknowledged as one of the finest racing and tuning houses to specialise in Honda machinery. The founder, Mr Tatsuru Ichishima, was a Honda test driver and racer who went on to form the legendary racing and tuning outfit. Named after an infamously tricky corner at the Suzuka circuit, Spoon are the experts when it comes to performance Hondas.
So, now we have some history, what precisely do we have here? This is a JDM FD2, imported to Hong Kong and liberally sprinkled with all manner of styling goodies and enhancements from the Spoon and Ings+1 catalogue, creating a superb homage to the Spoon Sports USA time attack racer. The vendor tells us that all work has been completed by his own professional workshop, and that the car remains largely unmodified mechanically. As such, this is a superb opportunity to acquire a machine that is vanishingly rare outside of Japan and has been suitably augmented with some wonderful cosmetic enhancements from some of the greatest names in tuning and motorsport…
