The Background

Because of its considerable structural re-engineering, the Roadster is frequently regarded as a better proposition than the hardtop Gullwing variant of the SLS.  While the Roadster's greater strength must be regarded as a plus, the ability to openly hear the 571bhp 6.3-litre V8 engine must be a compelling argument to choose it.

The topless variant was initially priced higher than the fixed head coupe, but with the market, as it is now, the Roadster is now presented as a comparative bargain. Created with the American market in mind, the increased fluidity of handling comfort, with smoother gearshifts and interior aids gives the car another distinctive advantage over its sibling. The super-sharp experience, durability, and reliability of the SLS, conceived and constructed by AMG for Mercedes, only add kudos to an already desirable styled car.

This South African import comes with a full-service history and a year's MOT. Several factory interior options include AMG heated sports seats with massage, Airscarf ventilation and carbon fibre trim to match the all menacing black exterior finish topped off by the optional 5-twin-spoke wheels. It also comes with an aftermarket integrated Apple Carplay system. Furthermore a 3-year warranty from November 2021 and a newly installed tracker subscription is included from the dealer that sold the car to the current owner.

The History

Stating that he likes to sample the upper echelons of premium cars at least once, he takes advantage of his ability to pick the very best driving cars from trustworthy dealers. As a result, the owner has experienced an impressive selection of thoroughbred and classic cars, including an SLS Gullwing.

Preferring the slightly more compliant ride of the Roadster over the Gullwing, he was also attracted to the stealth-like finish of the all black Roadster. The temptation of open-top motoring to enjoy the skies above while travelling in luxury and convenience was the major motivation for taking up the Roadster, but personal circumstances including the addition of 6 points to his licence have made insurance prohibitively expensive motivated him to find a new owner.

The Paperwork

Originally built in 2011 for the South African market, the car was then shipped to the UK and sold to its first UK owner by Mercedes Beaconsfield in 2017. Kitted out with many options, including the optional immobiliser and desirable Apple Carplay system, the car has covered around 8,000 miles since being in the UK.

It was recently sold to the current owner via the reputable GC Motors of Harrogate and has both a tracker subscription as well as a 3-year warranty which can be carried over to the next keeper. Naturally, the car comes with a watertight servicing schedule with all of its servicing paperwork. It has also seen a replacement exhaust manifold, oil sensor, engine wiring harness as well as a very recent pair of new tyres. The car has an MOT to December 2022.

The Interior

The appeal of the cabin is truly impressive and the quality of materials and build remain intact. The AMG heated leather sports seats with the massage function are in very good shape, with the lightest of wear noted on the driver bolster padding. That aside, both seats are damage free with no significant marks. The carpets and AMG mats are in well-kept condition, with no damage or wear.

As to be expected for such a low car, there is a little light wear on the footplates, but nothing severe. The dashboard is in excellent condition, with the padded leather and stitching all intact. The switchgear, controls and dials are all unmarked and show very little in terms of wear.  The Cockpit Management and Data system is fully functional and the Satnav, Carplay and rearview camera were all demonstrated to work.

The centre console is furnished with the optional high-gloss carbon fibre finish and is in good shape. The AMG performance steering wheel condition reflects a vehicle with such low miles and use. There are a couple of minor marks noted on some of the plastics at the back of the cabin, but the overall presentation suggests a careful ownership profile. The headlining of the soft top is clean with no marks or damage. The excellent condition of the boot carpet and trim suggests low usage.

The Exterior

Structurally there is very little to concern the next owner with no notable issues flagged up. Asides from a series of light scuffs noted on the front undertray, which is to be expected for such a low set car based in London. The bodywork is in excellent condition with no evidence of outdoor storage noted. All doors open and close without obstruction, their hinges and struts well up to the task.

The car has been PTFE coated and the rear and front bumpers have a paint protection wrap film which has a couple of minor trapped air bubbles on the surface of the nearside rear bumper. The Obsidian Black paint finish has a deep shine and even lustre throughout, with no significant stone chips or damage to the paint. The body fit is cohesive throughout the car, with equal panel gaps noted.

The glass is good throughout with no chips, marks or cracks with all door and glass rubbers all in good condition with no evidence of water ingress. No blemishes have been flagged up in regards to the state of the lights and lenses, with the exterior trim also in good shape. The 20” 5-twin-spoke alloys have recently been powder coated and are in good shape, with just light scuff noted on the nearside rear item.

They are shod with Falken Azenis high-performance tyres, all of which are virtually new and in excellent shape. The soft-top is in good condition, with a handful of age-related marks but certainly not enough to distract. It lowers and raises without hesitation and with no straining to the electric motor operation. The rear spoiler also operates manually with no issues.

The Mechanics

The thorough service history and regular attention to the mechanical aspects of the car should provide ample assurance that this SLS drives well and has provided the desired reliability. The car starts up instantly, with no warning lights flagging up any problems. The engine runs smoothly on idle, with any condensation clearing off quickly as the engine warms up. No untoward noises or leaks were observed.

The owner recently completed a long journey from the north and had no concerns with the car's mechanical integrity on the motorway. The 7-speed auto dual-clutch system works well with no reported issues with the steering wheel paddles. The steering and braking operate without drama and have been subject to regular checks. The adjustable suspension function works well, with no issues in terms of wear or damping. The physical condition of the engine and exhausts are positive.

The Appeal

With the more well-known Gullwing models being bought up by investors, the Roadster provides an ideal opportunity for true petrolheads to appreciate the AMG SLS' raw talent and abilities. The Roadsters further virtues of additional body strength, comfort and practicality, suggests that it is the most sensible option for those who are not swayed by the Gullwings party trick.

There is no doubt that every AMG SLS are now well established as a collectable classic, partly due to the durability of its mechanics and peerless build quality, but it also signifies something of an end of an era for the naturally aspirated race-prepared V8 engine.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 5-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000+ £500.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
