Alpina has been creating factory-approved BMW-based performance models since 1964, ever since the company’s founder, Burkard Bovensiepen, fitted a dual Weber carburettor to a BMW 1500 and wowed the sales director.
The relationship has continued since, with Alpine models of almost every BMW saloon and coupe produced always offering a little less performance, but at the same time a little more luxury, than the German company’s own ‘M’ models.
Until 2011, it was only saloons and coupés that got the Alpina treatment, but all that changed with the XD3, which was Alpina’s first SUV. Powered by a 3.0-litre twin turbo diesel engine, it offered a series of Alpina styling and handling upgrades and a 36bhp power upgrade, to 345bhp.
BMW and Alpina fans loved it, and the XD range of models has grown since as a result. But the original XD3 is where it all started – a future classic in waiting if ever there was one.
This example is a 2013 car in Carbon Black with a matching interior featuring unique diamond-weave interior stitching. It’s a rare and desirable car that would have cost over £59,000 when new.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
97k from new
MOT April 2023
Full Sytner service history
All Alpinas in the UK are sold through Sytner Group dealerships and this one has been in the care of Sytner for all of its life, with a fully stamped Sytner service history.
It has had just two previous keepers and is supplied with a full UK V5C and an MOT valid until April 2023, which it passed with no advisory notes.
Diamond weave upholstery with silver inserts
Leather and Alcantara mix
Clean and well-presented
BMW iDrive and infotainment system
The seats are the stand-out feature for the interior – finished in a black leather and Alcantara mix with a diamond weave pattern picked out in silver. It was a unique design for Alpina and a rare option that’s bound to attract aficionados.
It’s all in great order as you’d expect from a 2013 car with a sensible mileage – while the car features a relatively up-to-date infotainment centre with Bluetooth and audio streaming capability, along with terrific speakers.
Carbon Black Metallic
Superbly presented with no damage
Finished in BMW Carbon Black Metallic, the XD3 looks the part, especially with its privacy glass and 20-inch multi-spoke Alpina alloys, which are freshly refurbished.
There is no damage to speak of other than a few small marks and stonechips commensurate with the cars age and mileage, and certainly nothing of any concern.
3.0-litre Twin Turbo diesel
ZF 8-speed automatic transmission
The X3’s 3.0-litre diesel engine was given a bit of extra poke by Alpina, taking the overall power output to 345bhp. It’s ridiculously quick – official figures say 0-60mph takes just 4.9 seconds and the top speed is limited to 155mph.
Power is delivered by an eight-speed automatic transmission – the same as in a Rolls-Royce Phantom, no less – and it all operates perfectly.
The car has been given a fresh oil service before sale and has always been well-maintained within the main dealer network.
If ever there was a classic in waiting, this is it. Alpina’s first SUV and a fascinating car for BMW enthusiasts, with sensational performance and incredible power delivery. The bespoke interior is a further selling point. It’s part-SUV, part-sports car - and 100% desirable.

About Max Bids
The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.
C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 5-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.
£0 to £10,000
£10,000 to £50,000
£50,000 to £100,000
Automatically outbid immediately
When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours. You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.
Matching max bids
When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
