The Appeal
Motorsport has long been in Bentley’s blood and founder W.O. was most insistent that his road cars should be as capable as their Le Mans racers. Built in close collaboration with the company’s modern-day Motorsport Division, the Continental GT3-R embodies the spirit of those early Bentleys and consequently, is a marvellous car.
Limited to a production run of 300, it is not often one gets the opportunity to acquire a GT3-R. This one is in and in fabulous condition too, so it goes without saying that this is an excellent opportunity.
The History and Paperwork
- Registered in Germany
- Current TUV valid for the next two years
- 54,972 kilometres from new
- One of 300 made
The Interior
- Quilted sports seats
- Carbon fibre used in abundance
- Colour coded to the interior
As you climb inside this Continental, you are left in no doubt that it has been optimised for performance. Carbon fibre is used in abundance and the sports seats are optimised for holding occupants in place while enduring high cornering forces.
It is also immediately apparent that this Bentley’s owners have taken great care of it, which is reflected in the condition of the upholstery. We could see little wear to the diamond stitched seat fabric or indeed the carpets and controls. This is also testament to the quality of Bentley’s craftsmanship and we’re sure this Continental’s interior shall be serviceable for many years to come.
In spite of the emphasis on weight saving, Bentley did not compromise on comfort and infotainment. The GT-3 features all the modern conveniences you would expect of a 2015 Bentley and the vendor informs us that everything works exactly as it should.
The Exterior
- Glacier White with green accents
- Pays homage to racing Bentleys
- Very good overall condition
Paying homage to the GT3 track cars, this Continent is finished in Glacier White with green accents highlighting its haunches. This paint scheme is a nice nod to the racing cars without being overbearing and we think it looks great.
We couldn’t see any damage to the paint or bodywork and while we’re sure closer inspection could reveal the odd stone chip, there is nothing of note to report. As with the interior, carbon fibre is used externally and there is a prominent carbon rear wing and a front splitter. Both look to be in good condition, as do the further carbon flourishes on the bonnet and wing mirrors.
The black alloy wheels are a very sleek design and the vendor informs us that the tyres are in good condition.
The Mechanics
- 4.0-litre, twin turbocharged V8 engine
- Torque-vectoring technology
- Stiffer suspension than a standard Continental
- Carbon ceramic brakes
- Akrapovic titanium exhaust system
When it came to the mechanicals, Bentley’s engineers got the GT3-R just right. They improved engine performance, stiffened the suspension and upgraded the brakes, all the while ensuring that the Continental’s reputation for refinement and comfort were not compromised.
This example reportedly drives really well, with no issues to report and that 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 snarls via a rather special Akrapovic titanium exhaust. With Bentley incorporating Torque-vectoring technology for the first time in a road car, it controls its mass surprisingly well in the corners and is an absolute joy to drive.
Summary
We’re in no doubt that the GT3-R is a highly significant car in Bentley’s history. As a racer for the road, it is true to the company’s original ethos and with so few examples around, this is not an opportunity to be missed.
