The Background
The Softail name first appeared in 1984 and covers a number of Harley Davidson models, including the Softail Standard, Custom, Springer Softail, Heritage Softail, Heritage Springer, Night Train, Deluxe, Deuce, Fat Boy, Softail Slim, the Dark Custom Cross Bones, the Dark Custom Blackline and Breakout.
All are inked by the hidden rear suspension giving the appearance of a Hard Tail bike, but giving the comfort and ride of a sprung one, with the shock absorbers hidden under the transmission unit 2017 when they were moved to below the seat.
The History
The current owner has had this bike three years, and has added some personal touches but having multiple bikes has decided to part with this one.
It was bought new in the UK in 2015, and was taken back to Harley Davidson’s Oxford dealer around 2016 or 17 where it was repainted in the heritage pre-war paint scheme. It has been serviced when required back at the main dealer.
The Paperwork
With low miles the Harley has not needed much service and no repair work during the current owners time with the Softail. It was last serviced by Harley Davidson Guildford and MOT’d in February this year, and the full service history is her online by the main dealer network.
The Exterior
Painted in the inter-war years colour scheme of olive green with red and gold pin striping which superbly complement the retro styling of the bike. Having been done to main dealer standards the paint and striping quality is excellent, there is just a small scratch inside one front fork and some bubbling of the paint on the opposite fork. Overall the condition is excellent in all areas.
A genuine Harley Police seat was added in 2018 and the rear seat and foot pegs removed for a cleaner look. The pegs are included and fittings remain should they be wanted. Adding the the war time service and mild custom look is an air siren on the rear left, foot operated by a pedal mounted behind the left foot rest, a popular European custom mod bought from the Netherlands.
A subtle mod at the front are the small LED indicators, replacing the large standard items. This was done by Harley Davidson Guildford as it required coding to the bike.
The front wheel has been rebuilt with stainless spokes and the front tyre has only covered around 200 miles. The owner also has screen and vintage style panniers which can be bought with the bike if wanted.
Mechanics
With a full main dealer service history and most other work carried out by the same the bike has an excellent history. A Power FC box is included as it has a stage 1 tune, and a battery tender hook up and USB power outlet have been added for ease of use.
The appeal
With its pre war styling and colour scheme this has the look of a classic bike but with modern engineering the reliability and more usable ride comfort of a new bike.
Having rare dealer option paint this has a fairly unique look, great for someone wanting that retro look but wanting to stand out without being garish or obvious
