The Appeal
Pitching a car up against established purveyors of super saloons like BMW and Audi was never going to be easy. And yet, with the simply named ‘S’ version of its XE saloon, Jaguar tried and certainly succeeded.
Although the firm never managed to convert high praise from reviewers into actual sales, the S nevertheless ran rings around its German rivals. Its managed a particularly Jaguar-like trick that few cars in this sector achieve - to be both agile and engaging yet supremely comfortable even on rough surfaces when required.
Late cars like this one got a power hike to 381bhp, comfortably ahead of its European rivals. Finished in strident Firenze Red metallic with black trim, there is intriguingly little about this car to giveaway its supercharged capabilities. With full service history and fastidious ownership - including not being used in winter - this is a very tempting opportunity to acquire a capable and well maintained executive express.

- Smartly specified interior combining red leather with charcoal alcantara
- The interior attests to the careful ownership, showing no visible signs of wear
- Even the front seats, usually prone to some bolster and base wear, display as new

- Electric front seats
- Factory over mats fitted
- Different driving modes are available
Jaguar interiors are always designed to excel and delight and the cabin of this example is no exception. Smartly specified with contrasting red leather and charcoal alcantara, it offers a pleasing blend of sporting pretensions with typically Jaguar-esque luxury and refinement.
It is a well specified car too, including electric front seats and high end Jaguar factory Meridian infotainment unit with a well regarded premium sound system. The driver also has the option of various driving modes to suit conditions and mood.
This car has clearly been cherished and presents virtually ‘as new’, with barely any wear visible on the oft-used areas such as the front door cards and seats. The trim shows a similar factory-fresh condition with no visible scuffs or scratches throughout.
The Exterior
- Purposeful Firenze Red metallic paintwork with contrasting black trim and wheels
- Exterior presents very well, with no visible scuffs or marks to the bodywork
- Very subtle specification that underplays the potency
- Rear has been debadged to play into this subtlety
- Dunlop tyres fitted
- Some small stone chips visible on close inspection at the front
- Both passenger side alloys are lightly kerbed but no unsightly
- Recently detailed and subject to a three stage polish
The XE was designed by Ian Callum and is a shape that works particularly well with the purposeful ‘S’ addenda including the wider wheels, more purposeful bumpers and twin exit exhausts.
This car is finished in the compelling shade of Firenze Red metallic, which has been neatly contrasted with black trim and alloys. With few indications that this is the hyperactive supercharged model - this car appears to have been debadged at the back - it is both subtle and purposeful at the same time.
The bodywork reflects the care of the owners, only a few stone chips on the front and light kerbing of both passenger side wheels detracting. These are minor issues, easily rectified, and do not detract from the overall appearance.
The Mechanics
- Supercharged V6 280 kW/381 bhp 2,995cc AJ-V8 Jaguar engine
- 8spd automatic with various driving modes
- Rear wheel drive
- 0-60 mph in 5 secs
- Vendor tells us that the car has full Jaguar service history
The XE S wowed reviewers on its launch and the post-2017 performance upgrades - power rose to 381bhp - only enhanced their regard for this British-built upstart in the super saloon sector. Top Gear acclaimed the S as the best car in its sector, which is quite an achievement considering the competition from BMW and Audi.
The supercharged V6 3litre engine, RWD and 8spd automatic gearbox are really only part of this car’s story. Its real party trick is how it rides and drives. Most cars in this sector sacrifice ride in favour handling. But this is a Jaguar, after all, and its blend of body control and steering agility are matched by a surprisingly cossetting ride.
We are told that this car has full Jaguar service history and when not in use is garaged in a warm, dry environment. The seller tells us that it has never been used in the winter.
Summary
While super saloons from Audi and BMW loudly broadcast their capabilities, the subtle XE S crept up and stole their crowns. Very quick, blessed with an evocative supercharged soundtrack and yet comfortable for passengers over even rough terrain, the XE had it all.
This well maintained and nicely specified example is a great opportunity to discover this rare and understated express.
