The Background

The 928 was conceived in the mid 70s with a view to replacing the 911. Thoughts moved towards designing a GT ( Grand Tourer ) rather than an out and out sports car probably with volume sales into the American market high on their list of priorities .
A front engined, V8 configuration was deemed necessary, with the designers opting for a transaxle layout i.e. gearbox and rear axle as one unit, to give the new 928 better weight distribution.
Porsche broke with established thinking for the body, incorporating moulded plastic to cover bumpers front & rear and give the new 928 very smooth, aerodynamic lines which hadn’t been seen in car design before this.
Overall, it was a huge leap forward in style and became the first sports car to win the European Car of the Year Award.
It never did replace the 911, and the two models ran side by side from 1978 through to 1995 with approximately 61,000 928s being produced.

The History

First registered on the 14th of August 1987 by supplying dealers Swinford Motors of Stourbridge in the West Midlands, it was delivered new to Mr Baker of Wolverhampton.
This 928 then spent time in the Blackburn & Norwich areas before eventually moving to Northern Ireland in 2009.
After much searching for the right car, it was then bought by the vendor in 2015 and driven back over to England.
Only used on high days & holidays, having only covered 713 miles since its first Mot (2016) after arriving back in England, this only equates to 143 miles on average a year in current ownership.
This is one of the reasons the vendor has decided to part company with his 928 -  basically lack of time to use as it was intended.

The Paperwork

There is a current V5c in the vendor's name and a current Mot certificate expiring in May 2022.
The original Porsche folder is present containing the driver’s handbook, service history etc. Servicing appears to have been carried out by main dealers mostly up to 2009 and then by Porsche specialists. There are invoices for work carried out under the current ownership in 2016 & 2018 as well as others for parts, servicing etc.

The Interior

Radical, groundbreaking 80’s styling is apparent with the interior. There’s a vast array of knobs & buttons to keep you amused, along with leather electric seats, an instrument panel which moves with the adjustable steering column etc etc.
All are in good condition for the age & mileage of this car. Carpets are cream and along with the seats, would clean up very nicely and there were no noticeable tears of rips which would require repair. The front seats could benefit from a deep leather clean, but conversely show their patina off well.
Door cards are in great condition as is the headlining, topped off with a working sunroof and all dials & electrical switches appear to be in working order. There is a little scuffing to the leather armrest between the front seats & both the leather covered gear lever & steering wheel show signs of use.
Overall a clean & tidy interior which could be used as is or with little effort brought up to a high standard.

The Exterior

Presented in Porsche Diamond Blue, this 928 has a silvery tinge when viewed in the sunshine.
Paintwork is overall good, but it’s probably had a respray at some point in its life. There is some bubbling of the surface finish in a number of places, wheel arches are sound and are undersealed around the lips.
Sills too appear sound, window seal rubbers possibly need replacing as showing signs of perishing.
The wheels are all generally in good fettle with no major scuffing to any of them, although the tyres are showing their age and whilst they passed the recent Mot, may need replacing for peace of mind.
Again, this Porsche presents well and with a little pampering, would be ready for the next 34 years.

The Mechanics

This mid production run 928 benefits from the upgraded 5.0 litre V8 engine, taking power up to over 300 bhp.
Once warm, the 5.0 litre V8 soon settled into a gentle tick over with no adverse noises noticed when moving the Porsche around for photos.
It’s been recently serviced by a local Porsche specialist with knowledge of 928s. The engine timing belt was changed in 2016 along with the water pump, with the radiator being re-conditioned in 2018.
It appeared to change gear well & shifted into reverse without any difficulties whatsoever.

The Appeal

These 928’s just ooze that 80’s retro appeal. They have the power and handling of a sports car whilst retaining the refinement and equipment of a luxury saloon.
They looked like nothing else you could buy at the time and pointed towards car design of the future. In fact, they still don’t look out of place today, car designers have followed Porsche’s direction for the last 30 years.
This was, at the time of launch, a 170 mph car & was the world’s fastest sportscar, there aren’t many others that can lay claim to that accolade.
The 928 was and is unique and is one of the world’s most outstanding Grand Tourers, time to buy before they get priced out of reach.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
