THE APPEAL

Jaguar’s XJ40 saloon is very much a classic “of the moment”, with good examples becoming increasingly sought-after as the popularity of 1980s and 1990s classics continues to surge.

And of all the XJ40s, it’s the later models that are the most desirable thanks to their stronger, more powerful engines and less complicated electrical architecture. The 3.2s are, in addition, surprisingly economical with fuel economy figures in the high 20s in terms of mpg if you use them gently.

This one is a lovely example in remarkably solid condition, having been kept in storage for over a decade. Prior to that, it had the same owner since 1995, who purchased it when it was just three years’ old.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Handbooks and service documents
  • Service book stamped to 71k
  • UK V5C
  • MOT until June 2023
  • Old MOTs
  • Original V5
  • Haynes Manual

The XJ40 has been off the road for some time, having been kept in storage as part of a private collection of Jaguars for around a decade. The vendor is still in two minds about selling it, but a new house and a young family have led him to reduce the size of his collection.

As such, he has got the Jaguar out of storage and has put a fresh MOT on it ready for sale.

The car comes with all of its original booklets and handbooks, along with a service book stamped up to 71,900 miles. It has both a current V5 and also the original one, showing it to be originally registered to Swiss Life Vehicle Contracts as a lease vehicle. It was then kept in private ownership by the same owner from 1995 onward.

THE INTERIOR

  • Light beige leather
  • Walnut veneers
  • Original stereo and tool kit
  • Very good order

Although a standard XJ6 and not a Sovereign, this is still a sumptuously equipped car with many of the options ticked off the spec list, including full leather.

The Magnolia hide in this car is as inviting as it ever was and is in great condition, with only a tiny amount of wear to the driver’s side seat bolster.

The walnut veneers are spotless, the carpets are good and the headlining isn’t dropping – it’s just a lovely, relaxing cabin in which to spend time. It also has the original Jaguar radio-cassette and factory overmats.

In the boot, there’s a full-size spare wheel and the original Jaguar tool kit.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Regency Red Mica Metallic
  • Excellent structural condition
  • Great floors
  • Sought-after “Lattice” alloys

Finished in Regency Red Mica, the XJ6 looks absolutely fabulous, while the stylish ‘Lattice’ alloy wheels are the most sought-after of XJ40 wheel designs.

The body on the car is superb, with no corrosion to note and no dents or scuffs, just a few very minor chips and marks. Considering it’s the original 30-year-old paint, it’s in incredible order. Unusually for an XJ40, all four door handles operate without complaint. The only fault we could find is that the wiper is parked on the wrong side, which is a very common issue with XJ40's - typically down to the microswitch in the motor, or the in-line fuse under the glovebox, which are thankfully, cheap and simple things to rectify.

The floorpans are dry and corrosion free inside and out and the car has never been welded.

THE MECHANICS

  • 3.2-litre straight-six
  • Low mileage
  • Recently serviced
  • Drives exceptionally well

Under the forward-tilting bonnet you’ll find a 3.2-litre straight six ‘AJ6’ engine, which is renowned for its reliability. With under 78,500 miles on the clock, this one is barely run in, so it’s no surprise to find that it sounds glorious and holds impressive oil pressure. According to the vendor it is a very pleasant car to drive, with good steering and brakes and no faults of any note.

SUMMARY

This is a terrific example of the later-specification XJ40s, with the most economical engine, a great level of optional equipment and in lovely order throughout – it’s excellent both bodily and mechanically and has a gorgeous interior. A very special car indeed.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
