The original 986 Boxster was created to entice new buyers to the brand and successfully served as the gateway into the dream. Serving as Porsche’s entry-level car, it was the first all new Porsche for decades. As a car to help expand the brands market coverage, it still managed to retain tightly to Porsche's unblemished reputation for quality and prestige.
Comparatively cheap to buy and maintain, the Boxster offered a glimpse into the world of Stuttgart’s finest sports cars and rewarded the owner with first-class handling, reliability and particularly in this 3.2-litre form, plenty of power.
The Boxster S with 250 bhp and the ability to beat 6 seconds to 60 mph, followed the original release in 1999 and featured uprated brakes and ABS system, unique alloys, twin exhausts and a plusher interior. It was certainly worth the extra effort and should be considered the most desirable of the first-generation Boxsters.
This Tiptronic version in Guards Red with black leather has just 34K on the clock, Full Porsche service history and a pristine cabin. Registered in October 2000, with just two owners under its belt, this is the ideal time to get a taste of the Boxster’s charms at what has to be the most accessible stage in the car's lifespan.
The car is believed to have been ordered new from JCT600 in Leeds by its first owner. It was then sold to the main Porsche dealer in Edinburgh and remained north of the border until recently. It saw regular use for the first few years of its life, but in the hands of its last owner, used as an occasional car with it covering around 1000 miles a year.
Despite this low usage it has been regularly serviced at the Porsche main dealer, with an impressive array of service schedule stamps.
The car has full Porsche service history, as seen in the service booklet as part of the handbook wallet. With 27 Porsche stamps over its 21 year history, there is no doubt that this Boxster has been well maintained.
The V5 records just two previous owners, with the last owner having retained the car for an impressive 18 years and said to have garaged the car during their ownership. The car will come with a new MOT.
Fitted with leather seats, the cabin is presented in typical Porsche fashion as an understated yet well-designed cabin, with no distracting flaws observed. The seats show a remarkable lack of damage, with just a little age-related wear on the bolsters. The carpets and mats have been well looked after, with no wear or dampness.
The carpeting behind both front seats looks virtually new. The door cards have also been well preserved, with no scuffs or marks to suggest careless use.
The dashboard is in excellent condition, with no damage in regards to marks or wear. The dials and switches are in good condition, with the eye-catching white dials in excellent shape. All of the controls are said to work, including the climate control and electric window operation.
The gear lever and steering wheel are in line with the low mileage of the car and complement the very tidy interior. The various cubby holes are in full working order and the headlining is unmarked. Both luggage sections are clean, with no suggestions of heavy use.
The car is structurally in very good shape, with no issues with the floor pan, jacking points or inner wings. The body is straight, with even fitting panels and decent panel gaps. The metal is in excellent condition, with only a slight dent noted on the bottom of the offside sill. The decent Guards Red paint finish suggests that it has been well cared for by its owners with evidence it has seen indoor storage in its time.
It retains an excellent lustre with a deep shine and no significant chip damage observed. There are some under paint blemishes developing on the rear wings and some light bubbling noted on the arch lips. The doors open and close without any obstructions, all hinges and struts in full working order, with excellent door seals throughout. Both bumpers hang well, with a little light scuff on the front nearside corner being the only blemish of note.
The hood is in excellent shape, with no damage observed, it seals well with no evidence of water ingress inside the car. It retracts and raises with no straining on the motors.
The glass and their respective rubbers are in good condition, the lights and lenses are all in full working order with no damage. There is a fault with the retraction of the rear spoiler, and is currently stuck in the open mode. The 17” alloys are in good shape with a little sign of age in places. The Falken tyres are all less than 10 years old with plenty of life left in them.
There are no reported issues with the way the car drives. The engine fires up with no smoke with no drama other than a little condensation. Once warmed up, the engine idles well with no undulations or hesitancy, with the engine temperature soon settling in the sweet spot.
No grinding or knocking was heard from the engine while it was running, with no signs of oil leaks and all of its dashboard lights remained off after the ignition was switched on.
The car is said to drive well, with no reported steering or suspension knocks or wobbles. The Tiptronic box holds up well and engages gears with no problems. The brakes are in good condition with no wear or sticking.
Don’t let anyone tell you that this isn’t a real Porsche. Its reputation for reliability, performance and sharply composed handling with usable power is only half the story. This well-maintained example has all the right ingredients - rear (mid) mounted engine, pretty body and brisk performance with a little affordability thrown in.
With its high stamps and low miles, as well as a good brand reputation and driving dynamics, it must be a worthy option for someone looking for a dependable car for weekend adventures.
Undoubtedly a modern classic, the Boxster is well placed as one of those cars to buy today to enjoy, with an eye for the future.
