In 1934 when new, BMB 619 was registered to the Cheshire constabulary for patrol duties. Some 80 years later, following re-imaging by Triple M racing member Chris Smith, you’re more likely to be chased by your local constabulary!
Chris and his family have been part of the Triple M racing community for years and their understanding of all things MG is absolute. His vision was to make a very capable 6 cylinder special dressed with the instantly recognisable Q type coachwork. Fitting the NA engine into a four-cylinder chassis required some lateral thinking, the solution was to move the chassis mounting for the rear spring hanging to the furthest most rear cross member thus extending the car’s wheelbase. With 3ft 9 inch axles and 7ft 10-inch wheelbase the chassis is now correct to original MG Q type dimensions and the overall effect is visually close to the K3s of 1934 which sported the pointed tail in that year.
The car has been comprehensively rebuilt, the engine has benefitted from modern Phoenix crank and rods. To help with racing conditions and modern traffic, MG TA hydraulic brakes were fitted, thus helping to keep the increased performance in check. The 1300cc 6 cylinder engine is being blown at 10 psi, courtesy of a forward mounted Volumex supercharger sitting under the front valance. An MG N-type manual gearbox has been deployed, rather than the more fashionable but much heavier pre-select.
The vendor has proved the car to be quite capable in this season’s Triple M register events. Having spoken to him regularly at events during this season he now feels a new pilot would be best, as his pre-existing involvement in several other (post war) race series needs to take precedence. But he has had considerable enjoyment from the car together with the unique friendships which the MG and VSCC car clubs offer.
