Offered for sale is an extremely rare motorcar indeed, one of just four Gordon England saloons known to exist and one of just two silent saloons to survive, with the other known car, currently with a collector in Switzerland.
Gordon England was a successful engineer and latterly racer, building lightweight bodywork from his coachbuilding works in Putney, South west London, with a showroom in Mayfair.
Having built and raced successfully (often at Brooklands) an Austin 7 with bodywork to his design, he came to-the-conclusion, that heavy coachwork was often to blame for the poor performance of the light car and devised his own construction technique using solid plywood, no doubt influenced by his early career in the aeronautical industry.
Unusually the body was separate from the floor-pan and floated on three rubber bushed mounting points in order to maintain shape and reduce noise, hence the title ‘The silent saloon’!
A part completed project, UC 9503 has had a large amount of recent restoration work, the chassis has been completely re-built, with the frame being blasted and painted, axles rebuilt, new kingpins etc, correct 19inch solid centre wheels with recent Avon tyres. The bulkhead is unique to this model and is in superb condition as is the fuel tank and all fittings, all blasted and repainted, rear springs are new.
The dashboard has been restored and again floats independently of the body, it is complete with its correct Smiths gauges including the rare fuel gauge always fitted to GE saloon bodywork.
The engine was rebuilt by PIGSTY engineering whilst in John Malyans ownership and has been recently checked and runs very nicely, I have wired the car with correct period cloth braided wire to enable the car to be run, a small amount of further wiring for lights will be required.
The bodywork has largely been restored, some of it very well, but some areas still require work, this is not major and there is no rot in the body whatsoever.
The roof will need ash stringers making up and the floor requires building up, again this is all constructed in plywood and I have some patterns and photographs of what this ought to look like, much of this work is easily achievable by the home enthusiast.
The bodywork, when finished, will require re-covering in Rexine and whilst some modern fabric covering is included, I would recommend using the correctly produced material now available from RC Moss who have the original machinery to reproduce this fabric correctly.
Included with the Gordon England is the unique interior, including door panels, front seats and rear seat back and base, these all have their original leather coverings and it would be nice to preserve these rather than over restore due to the near unique nature of this car.
Also unique is the original windscreen frame, interior light fitting, sidelights, original cast number plates, Gordon England body number plate, Longbridge works plate, 1955 tax disc and a host of paperwork and information on these rare cars.
UC 9503 offers a unique opportunity to restore and complete a Gordon England silent saloon, a sought-after model with a similar sunshine variant recently advertised for £30, 000. This really is a great chance to both add value and gain the satisfaction of sympathetically restoring and returning to the road such a rare survivor.
