The Fiat 126 was introduced in 1972 at the Turnin Auto Show to feature an angular roomier Fiat 500-based bodyshell designed by Sergio Sartorelli. Five years later the engine capacity was increased to 652 cc capable of producing a mere 23 bhp. Despite the 4. 7 mi units produced, only 2 prototypes were ever constructed by Abarth but never released to the press.
The Fiat 126 offered was built in Italy in 1978 to feature the 652cc engine and dispatched to Greece. After 20 years of single ownership, it was sold to a collector who decided to restore and upgrade it to match FIA's 1977 homologation for the 126/ 650. The engine was overhauled by Poland's premier Abarth expert with high compression pistons, racing camshaft, a Fiat 750 Panda derived head, Weber 30 DGF carburation and hand made manifolds to separate exhausts to produce a staggering 50 bhp output. As per Abarth tradition the doubled power output was matched by a reduced body weight of only 450 Kg via plexiglass windows, single seat, lightweight carpets and rear roll cage. The transmission was also upgraded to short ratios and the suspension was overhauled with 500mania supplied racing parts. The end result is a supremely agile hillclimb performer with numerous distinctions and less than 1000 km / 50 hrs of total operation.
