Description:

The Ford Granada was launched in March 1972, succeeding the Ford Zephyr as Ford Europe’s large executive car offering. Originally named the Consul (due to a legal dispute with the Granada TV conglomerate), the Granada name was used throughout the range in 1975. As well as being popular ‘executive’, motorway-bashing transport, they became popular with taxi drivers, fleet owners and even The Sweeney thanks to their robustness, comfort and performance. Body styles offered were saloon, estate and a fastback coupé with engines ranging from a 2. 0 4-cylinder up to the 3. 0 V6. The coupé was not offered in the UK until 1974, when the revised ‘straight wing’ facelift model was released, and even then, it was only offered in the range topping Ghia trim with a 3. 0 V6 automatic, making this a rare car indeed!

This particular Ghia Coupé is a 1975 model, original registered in north west London on a N-registration in May that year. It has had 7 previous keepers in it’s 46 year lifespan, and currently has 52, 120 miles showing on the odometer – I cannot warrant this, however MoTs dating back to 2006 show it has not done many miles between now and then. The car is in mostly original specification with only normal age-related repairs carried out over the years, however it has had a few subtle upgrades carried out by a previous owner – Namely a vinyl roof and associated chrome trim delete (which looks a lot nicer in my opinion!), full contrasting blue leather interior (it would be cloth originally), electric front windows fitted, door lock operated central locking, 4-way speakers, period-correct alloy wheels (don’t know the manufacturer), fast-road camshaft and steel timing gear, electronic ignition and a downpipe-back stainless steel exhaust system.

Externally, the car is in good shape standing well in it’s dark ‘Orion’ blue… it certainly turns a lot of heads, and has that feel of a “European Mustang” in both character, size and looks – many passers-by have commented on having never seen one in person! Upon close inspection, there are a few odd light scratches here and there which is to be expected, including on the sunroof where it retracts, plus a little bit of bubbling on the bottom of the doors and the bottom edge of the rear valance. There is also some minor pitting under the paint on the O/ S/ R wheel arch, but this appears to a paint reaction rather than rust. Underneath, the car is very solid with no corrosion issues apparent, and is well protected with underseal to keep it that way.

Jumping into the drivers seat, the Essex V6 fires up easily from cold, and settles down once off choke to a smooth idle. Pulling out onto the road, it accelerates well with plenty of power and changes smoothly through the 3-speed auto box. It will sit all day at 70mph+ on the motorway with ease, and kickdown works as it should when the need to get past on B-roads is required. The brakes pull up strongly and straight, and the power steering is light and direct.

I have owned the car since early 2019, and have carried out various ‘recommissioning’ jobs plus basic servicing tasks to make the car usable again, and have been on trips around the UK including a drive to west Devon and back with no issues. This included sorting the brakes and fitting stainless braided hydraulic hoses, oil and filter change, a new heater matrix and coolant flush/ change, a new radio head unit for more modern external connections, plus various other small niggly jobs. I now want to scratch another itch now I have had my fun with it, so it is time for it to move onto its next owner to enjoy and use this coming season. The car will come with 12 months MoT, the history file with various books, plus some spare parts including a set of 4 original steel wheels plus the correct chrome trim hubcaps if you wish to return them to original. Please get in touch if you wish to know more.
