Description:

The Triumph Roadster… the quintessential 50s British sports car, popular at home and abroad with all members of society. Introduced in 1953, the TR2 was powered by a hardy 1991cc 4-cylinder, wet-liner OHV pushrod engine making it capable of 100mph with excellent fuel economy. When 1955 came along, the TR3 appeared now with 100bhp, front disc brakes and the option of an overdrive unit on the top three gears. The final evolution of the line, the TR3A was introduced in September 1957. It differed mainly in having a wider front grill, exterior door handles and a locking boot handle. It now also had 104bhp and 117lbft of torque, thus it could make 60mph in 10 seconds on its way to a top speed of 109mph. It was replaced by the more Italianate TR4 in 1961.

This particular example was manufactured in 1958, and was originally a LHD car destined for the USA. It is thought to have been bought by an American serviceman who was stationed in West Germany, returning it to the UK in March 1964. It was presumably changed to RHD spec around then – all factory parts used; the pedal box cut out in the bulkhead on both sides was standard. The previous owner acquired the car in 2010, and carried out a total nut-and-bolt restoration completing it in 2012. The extent of the work carried out is extensive, but is documented in dozens of invoices in the history file.

The vehicle was stripped down to a bare chassis, which was found to be in perfect condition having been galvanised by a previous owner. All the body panels were chemically stripped and e-coated by Surface Processing Limited prior to a professional repaint in Triumph ‘Signal Red’. To finish off, all new stainless steel bumpers and brightwork were fitted, along with a stainless steel exhaust; an aluminium fuel tank, repainted wire wheels and full interior retrim with black leather seat covers etc. A full set of weather gear (hood, sidescreens and tonneau cover) is also present, along with a car cover to keep the car dust free during the winter layup period.

Mechanically, it received a full engine rebuild by Worcester Classic Cars with new pistons and bearings etc; a lightened and balanced crank plus upgraded rear crank oil seal, unleaded head conversion, an alloy sump plus electronic ignition. It also has an uprated cooling system with alloy radiator, electric fan and Evans Waterless Coolant. A rebuilt TR4A overdrive gearbox was fitted with synchro on all gears including first and overdrive on 2nd to 4th gears along with a TR4A clutch kit.

Since finishing the restoration, the car has only covered approx. 4, 000 fine weather miles and it remains in outstanding condition throughout. It won the TR Register (Birmingham Group) TR2/ 3 Concours in 2012, and we are also told it has won their Master Class Concours six more times over the next seven years, beating off opposition from all the other TR Classes. Since arriving with us, we have put nearly 50 trouble free miles on the clock during the warm September sun. It starts, runs and stops as it should with all the electricals working correctly. The only things we can note are one or two very small minor chips and marks from the light usage, but apart from that we would describe the bodywork as almost perfect condition.

All in all, this is a fantastic shiny red sports car that is absolutely ready to be enjoyed and cherished, and would still be able to win the odd trophy when the show circuit returns. The car comes with a history folder including the V5C and old MoTs, old style green buff logbook; Standard Triumph records build sheet and a large file of restoration invoices plus the lovely ‘660 FOW’ number plate which is transferable if you were that way inclined. Please get in touch if you are interested in this stunning motor car!
