1968 Very original 109" diesel 12-seater Series IIA Station Wagon For Sale

Price reduced.

Almost entirely original: chassis, engine, gearbox, overdrive, bodywork (original marine blue, unfortunately previously resprayed), elephant-hide seats (not fitted but all included), wheels... Only two previous keepers. Used as my "daily" vehicle until this summer, this is a practical, real-world Land-Rover, a wonderfully original, characterful, unassuming and honest vehicle. She starts well and the engine runs solidly, exactly as you’d expect. She drives smoothly, the gearbox is sound (but can jump out of second if engine-braking on a steep descent). The overdrive is quiet. The sound-proofing is effective and has hugely improved the driving experience.

She drives as intended, and will happily tow three tonnes over mountain passes—slowly but steadily, all in high range, making use of split gears with the overdrive. Brakes are good and well-balanced, firm pressure required as expected.

I have thoroughly enjoyed owning and gently improving this vehicle. I’ve used her for monthly supply runs to Inverness—a 200-mile round trip including three mountain passes each way, often with a trailer, as well as for shorter local trips and for walking the dogs. Occasional short forays on land-rover tracks (she is very comfortable pootling along steep and rocky tracks in low range); no off-roading. She cruises most happily at 40–45 mph, and with overdrive will maintain 55–60 mph on the flat. I have driven her an estimated 10, 000 miles since the summer of 2018.

I don’t have covered storage available and the weather here on the coast is brutal: I am reluctantly selling as I don’t want to see her out in the rain and gales, and I now no longer have the time or facilities to maintain the vehicle properly.

Over the past three years I have:
* Removed over sixty feet of household flex, bell-wire and and twin-and-earth amateur wiring (I think a sound system was once fitted...)
* Replaced original twelve elephant-hide seats with five Exmoor Trim Deluxe High-back black leather; driver and passenger seats heated (originals all retained with frames, included in sale)
