1971 MGB Roadster - BRG, Older Resto, Overdrive, Chrome Bumper SOLD

*** SALE AGREED***

The Mk2 MGB Roadster is, in my opinion, the best of the bunch. They are the perfect mix between the sleek, stylish design of the much earlier cars, coupled with the refinements - 5 bearing engine, 4 synchro gearbox, better hood design, etc, making it the ultimate driver’s MGB. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices continually rising. Being both Tax and MOT exempt, owning these cars is very affordable, along with cheap insurance – what’s not to like?

This car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one in this price bracket. No, it’s certainly not a concours show car, but presents very nicely, and if you’re after a solid, reliable MGB to use that won’t deteriorate quickly, then this is probably the car for you!

The car has had only 2 previous keepers since new, and has been in long-term enthusiast ownership – covering little mileage over the past 15 years or so. The car had a comprehensive restoration in the late 1980s/ early 1990s. Briefly, the works included:

·  Bodywork restoration including new sills, new front wings, new castle sections, rear half wings, door skins, full respray in British Racing Green.
·  Rebuilt engine to fast road spec, fitment of Stage 1 cylinder head and Newman 271 camshaft and followers
·  3-1 manifold and stainless exhaust
·  30% uprated springs (slightly lower ride height)
·  Spax adjustable telescopic shock absorber conversion front and rear
·  Negative camber wishbone arms and uprated bushes, 3/ 4” anti roll bar
·  72 spoke wire wheels
·  Brake servo
In more recent times, the car has had various other works, including

·  New water pump fitted and coolant flush
·  Carburettor service, with new jets and needles
·  New Accuspark electronic distributor
·  New leather seat covers and foams
·  …and much more!
Bodily, the car is very straight and tidy. The panelwork is incredibly solid and straight, the doors shut with a satisfying ‘clunk’ and the panel gaps are particularly nice. The paint job has a few minor imperfections here and there but the car presents very well indeed, as you can see in the pictures. The wing-top seams are nice and clean, and free from major bubbling - as are the door bottoms, wheelarches etc.

The paintwork is 30-odd years old so don’t expect perfection – it’s not a show car! There is evidence of some microblistering on the bonnet and boot lid (having been stored under a sheet) but this isn’t immediately obvious on first impressions – in fact, I can’t even get a decent photo of it! Of course, the pictures do flatter the car a bit but if you’re not expecting perfection then I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. In my opinion, it is much better than buying a car that’s been painted very recently, as there could be all sorts of horrors hiding underneath the fresh paintwork.

The brightwork shines up very nicely, both bumpers are in good order and the recessed grille is in excellent condition. The 72-spoke wire wheels look fantastic and give the car a much more aggressive stance. The tyres have plenty of tread remaining and there is no cracking on the sidewalls.

The interior is a nice place to be, and is clean and tidy. The seat covers have been replaced with leather items and are very comfortable. The original rubber floor mats remain – a real rarity these days! Door cards, door cappings and dashboard all look great. A really nice leather-rimmed Moto Lita steering wheel has been fitted which completes the look. Inertia-reel seatbelts have been fitted, along with a radio, complete with electric aerial! The hood and folding frame is in good order, it fits nice and taut. The boot has been carpeted, and the spare wheel (also a 72-spoke wire) and tool kit is present. A hood cover is included in the sale.

The engine starts readily and runs nicely, ticking over at around 750rpm – slightly lumpy on idle because of the fast road camshaft. Oil pressure is excellent and there are no overheating problems – I have flushed the cooling system as a matter of course, whilst changing the water pump. The 4-synchro overdrive gearbox selects gears nicely, the overdrive engages without fuss and the rear axle is nice and quiet. An Accuspark electronic distributor has been fitted and the car has just had an ignition service with new plugs, rotor arm etc. If I’m being ultra critical, the carb spindles have a small amount of wear but the car is perfectly drivable as it is – perhaps something for the future. The fuel filler has been relocated inside the boot (see pictures), which really tidies up the exterior – but could be returned to standard easily enough.

You can see in the pictures that the engine bay is reasonably tidy, and body colour - it could be detailed further to look very nice indeed, or equally left as it is, if you’re more interested in driving than detailing. The inner wings have been lightly coated in clear waxoyl so could be brought back to a lovely finish with ease.

A great deal of paperwork is including, going back to the early 1980s, with lots of bills, receipts, MOTs and related paperwork. Of course, the car is now tax and MOT exempt – but you’ll see that the MOT history is very good.

All in all, this is an absolutely charming little car that is ready to be used and enjoyed. You won’t find many cars at this price that are at this standard. I travel all over the country to view these cars and this one is particularly good for the money I’m asking. If you’re looking for a show-standard car, please double your budget and look elsewhere, but if you’re looking for a nice, tidy-looking, usable car that you can enjoy and improve as you go, then this is probably the car for you!
