I bought this genuine type 45 Lotus Elan Sprint DHC in November of 2006. The MOT of that year shows 71571 miles on the clock. The odometer now shows 71789, so I think it is time the little car found a new home.
There are several MOTs and documents to verify the low mileage, with the previous keeper to me owning the car from 1978 until 2006, 28 years. The NEW keeper will be only the cars 4th owner.
Having studied the paperwork recently, it is clear that the DVLA have made an error in stating on the V5 that the number of previous owners is 3. The previous owner moved house at some point, as evidenced by paperwork, and when he sent in the V5 to have his address changed, they upped the number of owners. I am quite sure that if this is pointed out to the DVLA by the next keeper, they will correct their error, and then the NEW keeper will be only the cars 3rd owner.
There is a letter in the file from Maurice Storey, the Lotus factory archivist at the time, dated 1998, to confirm the original engine number etc. The fore runner of todays certificate of provenance.
The car was fitted with a new, genuine Lotus chassis in the 1990's, which is still in excellent shape having been rust protected. The paintwork is good, having been resprayed at Lotus in Norwich, also in the 90's. It could do with a good buff, but crucially, it does not need to be repainted. The paint is cellulose and the car is in its original colour of regency over white.
The panel fit of the doors, boot and bonnet are excellent, as can be seen. The seats, centre console, crashpad and pvc signed steering wheel are also in beautiful, original condition. Again, testament to the low ownership and genuine miles.
I have had it in mind to sell the car for a while now so began to recommission it. I have reset the valve shims to spec., rebuilt the carburettors and replaced both the clutch master and slave cylinders. The engine runs very nicely and starts on the button.
I have not had time to go through the braking system, which will need attention, the car having sat for 16 years. There will no doubt be other issues to sort out, ie slow indicators, nearside window inopperative, but at the asking price, there is plenty of headroom to do any work required and be quids in. I just do not have the time. PLEASE NOTE, THE PRICE IS FIRM, THE CAR IS VERY KEENLY PRICED WITH ALL ITS ATRIBUTES AND FAULTS. WHERE IS THERE ANOTHER ONE LIKE IT.
Alternatively, should a buyer prefer to purchase the car with all the faults ironed out, instead of doing or getting the work done themselves, I will find the time to carry out the works needed to bring the car up to MOT standard and obtain an MOT, and the price of the car will then be £38500. Still a very cheap original, late, drophead Sprint. Thanks for reading.
