1972 MGB GT - Teal Blue, Overdrive, restored - MGBGT MG BGT SOLD
There’s nothing quite like an early 70s MGB GT – they have the perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices rising all of the time.
This car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one in this price range. It's a very straight and honest example - certainly not a show car but presents very nicely, and would make an ideal car for regular use. It’s had a great deal of work during its recent life, which I will detail throughout the ad. It’s lovely to see a car which retains its rare ‘Fishmouth’ grille, which contrasts really nicely with the colour and wheels – in my eyes it’s the ultimate early 70s spec!
The previous enthusiast owner had had the car for a good number of years, and in that time concentrated on making it a reliable, mechanically sound car. Since being painted around 10 years ago, the car has been subject to an extensive mechanical rebuild over recent years, including:
• Full respray in Teal Blue – all panelwork appears to be very solid indeed with no signs of untoward filler
• Castle rails, floors and outriggers replaced.
• All new Navy Blue/ grey interior, including leather seat covers, seat foams, door cards, new high quality carpet set, dashboard covering, Moto Lita steering wheel
• Complete engine rebuild (+0. 020”) around 2000 miles ago, complete with unleaded cylinder head.
• New Borg & Beck clutch along with uprated release bearing – hydraulics replaced.
• New radiator and fan
• New alternator
• New fuel pump
• Suspension rebuilt and polybushed throughout
• Brake rebuild, including new brake master cylinder and servo
• Stainless steel exhaust
• Electronic ignition kit fitted
• 12v battery conversion
• Sliding sunshine roof recovered
• Kenwood stereo and speakers fitted in tailor-made footwell boxes
• Air Horns fitted
• New Yokohama tyres all round
• …. and so much more!
I have a great big folder full of history for the car which dates back 30 years or more. It includes a raft of receipts detailing parts purchased and work carried out.
Structurally, the car appears to be really nice and solid. The sills, castle rails, chassis legs, inner wing trumpet sections and spring hangers etc all appear to be rock solid. You’re more than welcome to come and have a good prod around! The car was painted around 10 years ago, the finish is very presentable but not perfect (please don’t expect a concourse car!). The wing-top seams are all in good order, as are the door and wing bottoms (all replaced during the rebuild). Like I’ve said, it’s not a concourse car but it’s not the usual tarted-up junk either. It makes for a really excellent usable car. External chromework has a fantastic shine, the bumpers appear to be the originals so do have some pitting. The Britax folding sunroof has been recovered.
The car runs beautifully, having covered minimal mileage since its engine rebuild. The carbs are balanced and tuned and the car ticks over smoothly, and pulls strongly. Oil pressure is absolutely fantastic and there are no overheating issues. The overdrive is fully functional, engages quickly and smoothly, the gearbox has no crunches and doesn’t jump out of gear. The brakes grab nicely, and the car pulls up in a straight line, and the car rides nicely (for an MGB!). The car is shod with recently replaced Yokohama tyres all round.
The interior is a lovely place to be, having had top quality leather seat covers, door cards, a new carpet set, wood-effect dashboard, Moto Lita wood-rim steering wheel – the list goes on and on! The replacement carpet set has been fitted very nicely indeed and looks great - a set of MGB rubber mats are included too. The headlining and sun visors are good, with no discolouration or sagging. A Kenwood stereo system is fitted, with the speakers fitted in custom made boxes in the footwells – no nasty holes in door cards here!
This is an excellent price for a fantastic car which attracts a great deal of attention wherever it goes. Obviously at this price it’s not a concourse show car but it’s generally very good indeed, but is ready to use and enjoy. You’ll be able to see that for yourself when you come to view.
