Packard would introduce its 8th series of automobiles for 1931 on August 14th, 1930. The Standard Eight models available were the 826 with a 127. 5” wheelbase and the 833 model featuring the 134. 5” wheelbase. The designation “Custom” was dropped for the Packard Eight lineup and then became referred to as the “Deluxe” models, which were divided into the 840 and 845 series cars with an imposing 140. 5” wheelbase and 145. 5” wheelbase, respectively. The Packard Deluxe Eight engine was the 385ci unit that developed 120hp and was mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox which allowed for more spirited driving. The massive power plant featured nine main bearings and was so well balanced that salesmen were known to boast about the smoothness by balancing a nickel on the cylinder head with the engine idling. With the Deluxe models taking the top of the Eight line up, the most astute customers often longed after chauffer-driven models such as body 491; the Deluxe Eight Sport Phaeton. This stunning dual cowl featured a rear flip-up tonneau with a foldable rear windshield for open driving pleasure. If inclement weather developed the convertible top also served as a support for the removable side curtains. Priced at $3, 790 when new, this luxury depression-era motorcar was seldom seen. Only 97 examples were built during 1931 and with few known to exist today, examples are highly sought-after by collectors.

The 1931 Packard Deluxe Eight Sport Phaeton featured here is finished in stunning all black sitting on top of a beautiful apple green chassis which is accented by a wonderfully black leather interior with a matching top and side curtains. This magnificent automobile has been collector-owned since the 1950s and was subject to a comprehensive two-year, body-off-frame restoration before it was shown at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Still presenting in Concours restored condition, this Packard would make an incredible showing at future AACA or CCCA events. We are proud to offer this incredible 1931 Packard Deluxe Eight Sport Phaeton to the most astute collector, investor, or enthusiast who understands the provenance of this legendary American marque and desires only the best the market can offer.
