1981 MGB GT - 3 owners, Pageant Blue, new sills MG BGT MGBGT SOLD
Rubber-bumpered MGBs are most certainly finding their feet in the market. Finding a good one is a tricky task as so many have been restored badly over the years. These cars provide an excellent investment opportunity for somebody that wants to enjoy their money, rather than having it sitting in the bank! No, it’s not a perfect example but provided excellent value for money.
This particular car has had only 2 former keepers from new, and has been subject to a major recommissioning/ restoration over the past couple of years or so, in the hands of its enthusiast owner. The car is painted in its original Pageant Blue – a colour which really stands out on these later cars. It is of course tax and MOT exempt. Mileage shows as 19, 000 but there is nothing to back this up – so could well be 119, 000!
The car benefits from recent new inner and outer sills (correctly spot welded), along with various other structural work. All appears to be nice and sound!
In addition to this the car has had a great deal of other cosmetic works, including new seat covers and foams, a new carpet set and more. The mechanical side of things has included fitment of an electronic ignition distributor, new coolant hoses throughout, a carburettor top-end overhaul, new heat shields and gaskets, and much more.
The car starts, runs and drives very sweetly indeed, ticking over smoothly at 700rpm. The engine (original to the car) fires up from cold with ease and isn’t overly tappety like most B-Series engines are. The engine pulls strongly and runs at the correct temperature - oil pressure is just where it should be. Overdrive is fitted, and is working well, and the rear axle is nice and quiet. The gearbox selects all gears without fuss and is a pleasure to use. It drives very nicely, stops in a straight line and doesn’t clunk and rattle like so many of these cars do.
Bodily, as you can see in the pictures, the car is very straight indeed – the panelwork is all very solid with no nasty repairs anywhere that I’ve spotted. The doors shut with a lovely ‘clunk’ and the gaps are pretty good. The paintwork presents nicely, with a deep shine – but at this price-point, please don’t expect it to be a concours show car! There is some minor bubbling here and there, but nothing to cause real concern – hopefully my extra photos will highlight all of these to you. Wheels and tyres could do with a refresh but they are still perfectly presentable, and the tyres have plenty of tread remaining.
The interior is very nice indeed, and looks great. The original steering wheel, dash, door cards and centre console are all in excellent order. As mentioned, the seats have been recovered and had new foams, and are very comfortable. The new carpet set is nice quality and also included are a set of custom-fit rubber floor mats.
It’s rare to find a BGT at this sort of price that hasn’t been messed around with and tarted up. As stated, it’s not a concourse show-standard car, but it feels like a ‘proper’ classic, not an over-restored trinket - and, in my opinion, has been done just right. I don’t think you’ll find another GT in this condition bracket, for this sort of money!
History-wise, there are some old bills and receipts along with a Heritage Certificate, current V5 document, and some photographs of the sill replacement.
I think I have priced the car very sensibly – you will struggle to find another roadgoing, usable, low-owner BGT for less than this! It offers a great opportunity for making minor improvements in the knowledge that the investment is safe. Alternatively, you could just use and enjoy the car as it is, exactly as it was designed to do!
