1963 Austin Healey 3000 MkII BJ7 - Black/White, Original UK Car SOLD

Many more images available via a link on my website - see above.

Introduced in August 1962, the Healey 3000 MkII BJ7 included many refinements that the earlier cars lacked – a wraparound windscreen, wind-up windows, quarterlights and a folding soft-top roof. Over 90 percent of these cars were exported to the USA and other countries, meaning this example is one of just 455 factory right-hand-drive examples. These cars are much more refined than earlier models and are much more usable.

This particular car has been in current family ownership since the early 1970s, sadly now being advertised by RMC Classics Ltd due to health issues. With much work carried out over recent years, it represents a fantastic opportunity for the new owner to attain a car which is ready for use – and can be improved further as and when you see fit.

Around ten years ago, the car had a fairly comprehensive recommissioning. The car has covered few miles since then, so still presents very nicely indeed!

The restoration included:
• Full external bodywork restoration including new sills and various external panels.
• Professional panels-off bare-metal respray (in original colours) which looks absolutely fantastic.
• Fully retrimmed interior – new leather seat covers and foams, new original spec carpet set, new door cards. The dashboard vinyl is original and still in good order.
• New soft-top
• New bumpers
• Brake rebuild, various hydraulics replaced, new calipers/ discs/ pads etc.
• Suspension rebuild – looks to have had a complete front suspension rebuild including shock absorbers, new rear shocks.
• New heater matrix
• …. and much much more!

Externally, the car presents beautifully. The panelwork is all incredibly straight, with a deep paint finish and fantastic panel gaps – doors in particular. The wire wheels have been re-powdercoated and were shod with 5 matching Firestone tyres at the time of rebuild – these have covered very few miles indeed! Chromework is all very good, the bumpers have been replaced. There is, of course, some minor pitting on the windscreen surround and door handles – but it still shines beautifully. A new soft top has been fitted well and is nice and tight. A hood cover is included.

The interior is truly lovely, having been trimmed in top-quality leather. A replacement carpet set has also been fitted (original spec Karvel), along with new door cards. The boot area has had similar treatment, having been trimmed with the correct Armacord carpeting. One small criticism would be that the steering wheel is original, and the Bakelite is deteriorating somewhat – easily sorted by restoring or swapping for a different wheel, depending on the taste of the next owner.

Mechanically, the car starts, runs and drives nicely. A compression test revealed good results, and the car keeps itself cool in traffic and oil pressure is just where it should be. The rear axle is quiet and the gearbox slick in operation – slightly weak synchromesh means one must take a little time with gearchanges! Overdrive functions flawlessly and engages instantaneously, and the kickdown switch works just as it should and there is no excess ‘slop’ in the drivetrain.

The car has just been treated to all new ignition components, including good quality coil, points, rotor arm, condenser, distributor cap, HT leads and a new set of plugs. The carburettors have had a top-end overhaul and have been rebalanced and tuned. The car starts easily from cold and hot, and ticks over smoothly and pulls well – it sounds absolutely fantastic! We have replaced the rocker shaft assembly, and given the car an oil and filter change. We’ve also fitted a new battery for peace of mind, due to its lack of mileage over recent years. The dynamo charges fine (still positive earth). Brakes and suspension appear to be in fine fettle, stopping well in a straight line, and the car rides as smoothly as you’d expect.

The engine bay is very ‘original’ – I don’t believe the engine has ever been removed! It’s an area that could be cosmetically improved but personally I quite like the original, un-messed with feel. Chassis appears to be nice and solid (but again, unrestored aside from sills, with only minor repairs here and there) – so don’t expect it to look like a concours show car underneath. That said, I’ve seen far far worse – don’t take it as too much of a criticism!

All in all, this represents a fantastic opportunity for a new owner to have a car that can be enjoyed and used, whilst leaving the option to improve some minor cosmetics and further increase the car’s value without being out of pocket. It’s not a freshly over-restored example, it oozes originality and still feels like a ‘proper’ classic car.

The car comes complete with a copy of the ‘buff’ logbook (which shows the car carried the registration '3000 DH' at one point!), along with various bills and receipts from over the years - mainly showing the expenditure for the restoration. A current V5 document is present. The car was bought as a toy and was only ever used on high-days and holidays, never travelling far, thus meaning the car never really required any major mechanical works other than general maintenance until its recent restoration.

The car is being stored at the family’s address in Hazel Grove, Stockport – please contact us to arrange a viewing (with us in attendance).
