1972 MGB GT - Flame Red - Restored - Overdrive MG BGT MGBGT SOLD
We are selling this car on behalf of the widow of Eddie, a very good friend who passed away a little while ago. Sadly it’s time to let the car go to a good home where it can be used and enjoyed by a future custodian.
Eddie bought the car in 2018 in a restored state, and set about perfecting it further and making it fully capable of regular use. The car was used properly, including a major European tour in 2019 and various lengthy trips around the UK too. No, it’s not a show car but a really nicely sorted example that’s just begging to be used.
The car has, quite frankly, the largest service history file I’ve ever seen – hundreds and hundreds of bills, receipts, notes and records, including a diary stating every single bit of work undertaken on the car over the past 10 or 15 years. The records go back to the early 1990s.
If you’re looking for a well-sorted car for touring, this is the car for you. It is incredibly smooth and excellent in stop-start traffic. The ‘feel’ of the car, both in terms of build quality and the way that the car drives, clearly shows that the standard of work carried out has been very good indeed. The car fires up beautifully from cold and hot, and idles very healthily. It pulls strongly and sounds great. Electronic ignition has been fitted, the carbs are tuned to perfection, K&N filters and matched needles have been fitted. A 12v battery conversion has been carried out and an immobiliser cut-off switch is also present.
It rides particularly well thanks to the 15” Minilite wheels and Michelin tyres. The servo assisted brakes stop the car beautifully with minimal effort. The car is properly soundproofed so doesn’t clatter and bang like so many BGTs do – it’s a really nice thing to drive. Telescopic dampers have been fitted. Oil pressure is spot-on, and the car does not overheat – water temperature runs slap-bang in the middle of the gauge. Overdrive is fitted, and functions flawlessly. Major works over the past few years have included a replacement clutch, release bearing, new oil cooler, replacement oil pressure relief valve – but the list goes on and on!
Bodily, the car is straight and tidy and presents very nicely indeed. The panel gaps are good, and the panelwork is generally very solid. Obviously at this price, this is not a concours show car, so do not expect absolute perfection. The car was repainted several years ago and still presents very with a great shine – but there are a few bubbles here and there, as you’d expect from a car that’s been used. Hopefully you can spot these in the extra pictures. Structurally, all seems to be well – floors, sills, spring hangers, chassis legs etc all appear to be nice and solid. The engine bay is very clean and tidy indeed, and with some detailing could be made to look outstanding. Chromework is in good order with only minor pitting.
The interior is in fantastic order. Leather seat covers, a good quality carpet set, excellent door cards and dashboard, and even a stereo! Eddie fitted a Britax sliding sunroof which really makes these cars fantastic through the summer – particularly if you’re touring somewhere sunny and hot!
It would take me a great deal of time to detail everything about the car, so do please come and view it and see for yourself. It's simply impossible to list in this advert the works that have been undertaken in recent years – you’ll have to come and have a look through the history file!
All in all, this is an absolutely stunning little car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. You won’t find a better car in this price bracket. If you’re looking for a concourse show car, double your budget and look elsewhere – but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you’re looking for a straight, solid, reliable car to enjoy properly.
