A40 Somerset: Utterly Original/ 24k Miles

The A40 Somerset must be one of the most stylish Austin designs of the post war period with flowing lines, bulbous curves, column gear change and front bench seat reflecting the popular “transatlantic” styling of the time. Firmly aimed at the export market the car proved popular at home and abroad and today good examples are highly prized and extremely difficult to find.

Our Austin A40 was delivered to its first owner, Mr Harold Denning of Worcester on 16th February 1953 and used sparingly until his death in 1968. At this time the Somerset was purchased by a local BMC dealership (Bromyard Road Motors (Worcester) Ltd run by three brothers at this time and displayed in their showroom for the next 38 years.

The Austin first appeared on the Milestones radar in 2018 with just 23, 159 miles and still running on two of her original tyres and incredibly rare original red rubber front mats. The Somerset went through an MOT only requiring new tyres, a stop brake bulb, wiper blades and brake adjustment.

The boxed history file with the car includes: -

·  Pouch containing 2nd set of keys, commemorative medal, tax discs since 1958
·  Published article on the car + show board
·  Buff logbook\Registration Docs, MOT’s, etc.
·  Documentation & invoices of work completed by last owner
·  Transcripts of conversations with previous owners that really tell the story of the car

Today the Austin is one of the most original classics that you could wish to find. Most cars of this period are restored or corroded – this is neither and remains much as she left Longbridge in 1953 with original paint and interior.

Mechanically she has been enthusiastically maintained as part of a small private collection in West Sussex covering just over 1, 000 miles in the last four years – the owner does not believe in trailer queens!

Cars this remarkable rarely come to market and the 1950’s styling simply never goes out of date – it is a stunning combination. We expect this very rare survivor to find an appreciative new custodian very quickly.
