1980 MGB GT - Vermillion, Restored, Overdrive, History - MGBGT MG SOLD

Rubber-bumpered MGBs are most certainly finding their feet in the market. Finding a good one is a tricky task as so many have been restored badly over the years. These cars provide an excellent investment opportunity for somebody that wants to enjoy their money, rather than having it sitting in the bank!

This particular car has been subject to a major recommissioning/ restoration over the past year or so, in the hands of its enthusiast owner. A huge amount of mechanical work has been undertaken, following a major structural and bodywork resto around 10, 000 miles and some 20 years ago. The car is solid, well-sorted and ready to use! The car is painted in gorgeous Vermillion – a zesty orange colour, and looks fantastic on these later cars. It is of course tax and MOT exempt and has covered 92, 000 miles from new.

There’s plenty of paperwork dating all the way back to when the car was new – including a Heritage certificate and a stamped-up Leyland ‘Passport to Service’, along with plenty of receipts and information on the car over the years.

A professional major restoration at the turn of the century included replacement inner and outer sills, front and rear half wings, a complete engine rebuild and much more. This work was clearly carried out to a very good level.

The more recent recommissioning included an endless list of items, including a full carburettor rebuild, new coolant hoses, the fitment of a more modern (and quieter!) electric fan, and the removal of all the items in the engine bay (pedal box and heater box included), all of which have been detailed and refitted, and the engine bay painted – it looks absolutely fantastic!

The owner also spent a huge amount of time scraping the complete underside of the car back to the bone, and repainting with a solid rubberised type underseal (not the nasty waxy stuff that hides all sorts of horrors). The suspension has been fully rebuilt all round (front crossmember completely removed and repainted), and it all looks like new. Telescopic shock absorbers are fitted at the front, and the car has been rebushed. The list is honestly endless, and can only really be appreciated when you see it!

The car runs and drives very sweetly indeed, ticking over nicely at 700rpm. The engine fires up from cold with ease and isn’t overly tappety like most B-Series engines are. The engine pulls strongly and runs at the correct temperature - oil pressure is just where it should be. Overdrive is fitted, and is working well, and the rear axle is nice and quiet. The gearbox selects all gears without fuss and is a pleasure to use. It drives very nicely, stops in a straight line and doesn’t clunk and rattle like so many of these cars do. The Rostyle wheels have been refurbished and fitted with chrome rims, and the tyres are all good.

Bodily, as you can see in the pictures, the car is very straight indeed – the panelwork is all very solid with no nasty repairs anywhere. The doors shut with a lovely ‘clunk’ and the gaps are pretty good. The paintwork presents very well from a distance but on closer inspection it’s clear that some areas have been blown in over the years, and some areas have a very slightly mismatched colour and texture. However, the panelwork beneath the paint all appears to be fantastic, which is the important thing – much better to buy an honest car rather than one with fresh paint, where you’ve no idea what’s hiding underneath! Anyone wanting to take the car to the next level would probably want to repaint the car, but quite honestly it would then make a show-car example. However, I’m quite fussy when it comes to paintwork so am likely being over-critical – it would be quite happy as it is! The chromework (window surrounds etc) are all in very good order, and the car appears to have all of its original glass, too. There are a few minor scuffs and dings here and there (the worst of which is a dent in the driver’s side wing-top where something has been dropped on it – nothing a paintless dent man couldn’t sort!) - but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance in an obvious way.

The interior is very nice indeed, and very original – original dash, door cards and centre console are all in excellent order. Even the seatbelt and handbrake warning lights work – a real rarity! The original front seat covers are in generally good condition but the driver’s seat base has a couple of marks.

It’s rare to find a BGT at this sort of price that hasn’t been messed around with and tarted up. As stated, it’s not a concourse show-standard car, but it oozes history, and, in my opinion, has been done just right. I don’t think you’ll find another GT in this condition, with such low ownership, for this sort of money!

I think I have priced the car very sensibly – you will struggle to find another well-restored, roadgoing, usable GT for less than this! If the paint was a little better, I would be pricing it at £7k+, so there is plenty of room for making improvements as and when you see fit, safe in the knowledge that your investment is good! Alternatively, you could just use and enjoy the car as it is, exactly as it was designed to do!
