1974 MGB GT - Nightfire Red, Chrome Bumper Overdrive MGBGT MG BGT SOLD
There’s nothing quite like an early 70s MGB GT. They have the perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices rising all of the time. This is one of the later the chrome bumper cars – it is NOT a rubber bumper conversion. If you’re looking for an entry level example to use, enjoy and tinker with – then this is probably the car for you! No, it is NOT a freshly restored car and with all of these cars there is always ongoing tinkering and fettling - the joy of classic motoring!
The car was subject to a major back-to-the-bones restoration in the 1990s when it clearly had an extensive panelwork and mechanical rebuild, and was subsequently painted in Nightfire Red – which suits the car really well indeed! Over more recent years the car has had a variety of work completed by specialists to ensure it remains usable, this car would make a sound car for regular use, and to be improved as and when you please. We bought the car to undertake a restoration but have decided that it’s not really in need of such major work – and we’ve got enough on our plate as it is!
Recent works include:
• Replacement of clutch master and slave cylinders
• Service, including oil and filter change, new spark plugs
• New 12v battery
• Carburettor balance and tune, ignition timing setup
• Stering rack gaiters and track rod ends
• …and lots more! Over the past 5 years or so, the car has had a brake system rebuild (including new master cylinder), silicone coolant hoses fitted throughout, 15” Minilite wheels fitted and various other works.
The engine starts readily and runs well, ticking over at around 750rpm, just as it should. Oil pressure is great and there are no overheating problems whatsoever. The brakes are nice and sharp (for an MGB!) and the car stops in a straight line. The 4-synchro overdrive gearbox selects gears nicely without fuss and overdrive engages quickly. You can see in the pictures that the engine bay is reasonably tidy and could be detailed further to look very nice indeed. I’ve driven the car a couple of hundred miles and it goes (and sounds!) very well. The stainless exhaust system sounds great!
Bodily, the car is nice and straight but by no means is this a show car! It’s clearly been restored to a very good level. The paint has a good shine but having been on for probably 20-odd years now, there are some areas of bubbling here and there – study the pictures for more detail. Obviously this is not an £10, 000 example and I don’t think you’ll find a better example for this sort of money! The brightwork cleans up nicely and shines well. The 15” Minilite style wheels are in excellent order. Structurally, the car appears to be sound but there are some areas that would benefit from a scrape down and re-application of underseal. I’ve not done this so that any potential buyer can see exactly what’s what!
The interior is clean and tidy. The dashboard, door cards, headlinining and carpets are all in good order, and the seat covers appear to be the originals - slight fraying but nothing horrendous! The wood rim steering wheel is a thing of beauty and the period-style modern Bluetooth radio works well. The sunroof is actually a really nice add on and really lightens up the interior, and doesn’t seem to leak at all!
Included is various paperwork covering the past 20 years or so since the restoration, MOTs and bills for the more recent work. Of course, the car is now MOT and tax exempt.
All in all, this is a great entry level car for someone to tinker and fettle with as you please. You won’t find a better sub-£6k MGB! I travel all over the country to view these cars and this one is particularly good for the money I’m asking. If you’re looking for a show-standard car, please double your budget and look elsewhere, but if you’re looking for a nice, tidy, usable car that you can enjoy and improve as you go, then this is probably the car for you!
