1976 MGB GT - Citron Yellow, Overdrive - MGBGT MG BGT SOLD

Rubber-bumpered MGBs are most certainly finding their feet in the market. Finding a decent, honest example is a tricky task as so many have been restored badly over the years. These cars provide an excellent investment opportunity for somebody that wants to enjoy their money, rather than having it sitting in the bank!

MEC570P was bought new at the Grange Motor & Cycle Co, Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria - and has spent all of its life in the North West, in a string of enthusiast owners – the last one since 2009. The service history includes the original British Leyland ‘Passport to Service’ which contains service records into the 1980s, and there is various paperwork which records works carried out since then. MOTs certificates go back to the mid-1980s.

Looking at the receipts, the car had a restoration in the late 1990s which included new inner and outer sills. Over the past 10 years or so, the car has benefitted from a new clutch, fitment of an unleaded cylinder head, new radiator, thermostat and hoses, new heater matrix, new fuel pump, new oil cooler – most recently the car has had new front springs, king pin assembly and wheel bearings.

The car runs and drives very sweetly indeed, ticking over nicely at 700rpm. The engine fires up from both hot cold with ease. The engine pulls strongly and runs at the correct temperature - oil pressure is just where it should be. Overdrive is fitted, and is working well, and the rear axle is nice and quiet. The gearbox selects all gears without fuss and is a pleasure to use. It drives very nicely, stops in a straight line and doesn’t clunk and rattle like so many of these cars do.

Bodily, as you can see in the pictures, the car is very straight and honest – the panelwork appears to be solid with no nasty repairs anywhere. The doors shut with a lovely ‘clunk’ and the gaps are pretty good. The paintwork presents very well from a distance but on closer inspection it’s clear that some areas have been blown in over the years, and some areas have a very slightly mismatched colour and texture. In my opinion, it’s much better to buy an honest car rather than one with fresh paint, where you’ve no idea what’s hiding underneath! However, having said that, I’m quite fussy when it comes to paintwork so am likely being over-critical – it would be quite happy as it is! The Rostyle wheels are shod with Continental tyres all round.

The car was Ziebart treated from new – this treatment included the engine bay, so you’ll see in the pictures that the engine bay isn’t the cleanest – but the Ziebart coating can be removed and detailed should you so wish.

The chromework (window surrounds etc) are all in very good order, and the car appears to have all of its original glass, too – all etched with the car’s registration.

The interior is clean and tidy, and very original – original dash, centre console and headlining are all in good order. The original front seat covers and foams are in generally good condition but the driver’s seat has a couple of repairs. A leather Moto-Lita steering wheel has been fitted.

It’s rare to find a BGT at this sort of price that hasn’t been messed around with and tarted up too much. As stated, it’s most certainly not a concourse show-standard car, but it oozes history, and, in my opinion, has been done just right. I think I have priced the car very sensibly – you will struggle to find another roadgoing, usable GT for less than this! The car is ready use and enjoy, and further fettle with as you please.
