1962 Austin Healey 3000 MKIIA - Racing History For Sale

This is a very interesting and sought-after original RHD Austin Healey 3000 MKIIA BJ7 that was built on the 1-9th October 1962. The car personally exported on the 17th October 1962 in RHD format with optional items to include overdrive, wire wheels, heater, laminated windscreen and left hand dip headlights. The Healey was kept in original specification until the late 1970’s when it was stripped and rebuilt to a complete Works replica specification for track racing purposes. Modifications included a full flow oil system with oil cooler, lightened flywheel, Limited Slip Differential, competition overdrive, Bendix fuel pump, foam filled fuel tank, competition clutch, 6 branch exhaust manifold, exterior battery cut off, Works specification dynamo and water pump, re-conditioned oil pump, modified brakes, rack and pinion steering and Works hard top.
According to the paperwork in 1984 the car was an Austin Healey Concours winner and with the above modifications and triple 2" SU carburettors on a 190BHP competition engine the car was successfully raced between 1985 and 1990. In the Austin Healey Championships 1986-1989 it finished 3rd place and then 2nd place each year following, driven by Chris Reece and Steve Newman. The car was also 2nd in the 1987 Donald Healey Memorial Race and William Lyons six hour relay race and a year earlier was the Austin Healey Sprint Champion and Norwich Union RAC classic finisher. In the 1990 season the Healey competed in the Jaguar Drivers Club Team Challenge finishing 1st place in race 1 and 2 and recording a new fastest lap record.

During the 1990's the Healey was used for general classic car driving, still presenting as a Works replica. In 1999 the car was treated to a light program of work including new starter motor, brake master cylinder, brake shoes, new coolant hoses, alloy rocker cover, steering coupling and rack, re-conditioned brake servo but from 2007 to 2018 just 200 miles were covered in the car. This Healey came to us in late 2018 in part exchange and was sold in relatively scruffy condition, presenting as an older restoration requiring some mechanical improvements.

Over 2019 in the region of £45, 000 was been spent on 539 EGJ taking the car to a beautifully finished standard. First of all, the owner commissioned some body refurbishment work to include new floor pans and sills and then had the car fully re-painted to a very high standard. The Healey was stripped to the rolling shell, interior removed, and engine and ancillaries all removed in order to achieve a high quality finish. The Healey body was prepared, treated to new wing vents and fully re-painted and re-fitted with brand new front and rear bumpers, spot lamps, badge bar, new tyres, chrome wire wheels and various new rubbers.

On completion of the bodywork, the Healey was then re-treated to a full re-trim that included re-trimming the seats in top quality Black leather with Red piping, new door cards, quarter panels, kick panels, re-trimmed dash top, centre console, new carpets, door furflexes and new stainless finished dashboard. The Healey was completely re-wired with a brand new loom, gauges re-conditioned as necessary and various dash cables etc replaced. Whilst the engine was removed from the car for the re-paint, the head was removed, then inspected. A decision was made to then fully rebuild the engine. This included new main and big end bearings, pistons, re-ground crankshaft, rebuilt unleaded cylinder head and on re-installation of the rebuilt, detailed unit, the car was treated to new engine and gearbox mountings, new manifolds, a brand new clutch, new oil cooler pipes and full brand new exhaust system. The overdrive unit was treated to re-conditioning, the differential nose seal replaced and a full brand new heating system fitted to the car. The car was mechanically re-commissioned with the braking system re-conditioned to include new master cylinder, brake servo and re-lined brake shoes. The suspension was treated to new kingpins and various bushes and the fuel tank was re-conditioned.

Having been owned by one of our regular customers in the South West, 539 EGJ returns to us in part exchange and is ready to be enjoyed, its rebuilt engine is still running in, with thousands of pounds worth of brand new parts the car is mechanically in excellent condition, the body and paintwork present beautifully, the re-trimmed upholstery is top class and the majority of chrome work is brand new. This is now a fantastic opportunity to purchase a stunning UK supplied Healey with fantastic race provenance, that has recently completed a program of work that has been carried out to a very high standard.
