Development of the 8 Series began in July 1981, with both the final design phase reaching completion and production development starting in 1986. The 8 Series debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in early September 1989 and was designed to move beyond the market of the original 6 Series. It had substantially improved performance, as well as a far higher purchase price. The first BMW 850i’s came out in the UK in early 1991, making this car we have here one of the first ones.
Sales of the 8 Series were affected by the global recession of the early 1990s, the Persian Gulf War, and energy price spikes. As a result, plans for the high performance M8 variant were dropped in 1991. As we know there are quite a few cars throughout history that for whatever reasons didn’t sell in their day, with the BMW 8 series it was the price of the car. The quality and performance were without question and anybody who had one would confirm that fact, and this car due to no fault of its own falls into this category.
This example is finished in Brilliant Red with Parchment leather, which was in the day a bold choice, hence the rarity of the colour combination today. It was supplied by Sytner Nottingham on 25/ 4/ 1991 to its first owner and, as well as the colour combination, it enjoyed some nice factory extras such as 16” Forged Alloy Wheels, Graduated Tinted windscreens, Auto-Dim Interior Mirrors, Sports Seats and Auto Air Re-Circulation. All great, tasteful and useable extras of the time.
The vendor has supplied with the car a selection of invoices to show that a lot of money has been spent on it recently with things such as brakes, coil springs, water pump, viscous coupling, thermostat, front and rear shock absorbers, top mounts and a service, along with a host of other bits and pieces that all add up to a bill in excess of £4, 000. It also enjoyed a fresh MOT in May.
These cars are getting very rare now and this one must represent great value and a wise investment and most importantly a car to be enjoyed by yourself and all that see it, as our vendor experienced when he drove the car to us.
