1979 MGB GT - Pageant Blue, Overdrive, Good Usable Car - MGBGT MG SOLD
Rubber-bumpered MGBs are most certainly finding their feet in the market. Finding a decent, honest example is a tricky task as so many have been restored badly over the years. These cars provide an excellent investment opportunity for somebody that wants to enjoy their money, rather than having it sitting in the bank!
I purchased this very straight example, requiring some cosmetic work, from its previous owner who had enjoyed the car for a couple of years and was moving on to a Caterham! He had bought the car from a deceased estate, and it had clearly been enthusiast owned.
I have been through the car mechanically and ensured all is well, ready for the next owner. I had intended to ‘finish the job’ and respray the car, but due to some upcoming back surgery I have decided to advertise it as it is – I’m struggling to do much at all at the moment!
The car runs and drives very sweetly indeed, ticking over nicely at 700rpm. The engine fires up from both hot cold with ease. The engine pulls strongly and runs at the correct temperature – the oil pressure is particularly good. A compression test revealed excellent results. Overdrive is fitted, and is working well, and the rear axle is nice and quiet. The gearbox selects all gears without fuss and is a pleasure to use. It drives very nicely, stops in a straight line and doesn’t clunk and rattle like so many of these cars do. The mileage is showing around 43k, looking at the engine bay, interior, original floors etc etc, I’d say this is most likely the case!
Bodily, as you can see in the pictures, the car is very straight and honest – the panelwork appears to be solid with no nasty repairs anywhere. The doors shut with a lovely ‘clunk’ and the gaps are pretty good. The paintwork presents very nicely from a distance but on closer inspection it’s clear that some areas have been blown in over the years, and some areas have a very slightly mismatched colour. In my opinion, it’s much better to buy an honest car rather than one with fresh paint, where you’ve no idea what’s hiding underneath! However, having said that, I’m quite fussy when it comes to paintwork so am likely being over-critical – it would be quite happy as it is, but a perfectionist may consider a respray. There are a few areas of minor bubbling and blistering but nothing too worrying – but please don’t expect a perfect car. I have uploaded pictures of all the panelwork on my website so you can get a very good idea of condition from them. The very rare ‘LE’ wheels are shod with matching tyres all round.
Structurally, all appears to be really nice and solid. It’s had replacement outer sills and castle sections at some point, but these seem to have been done properly. The spring hangers, chassis legs etc all seem to be really nice and solid. What’s really nice is that the car isn’t slathered with underseal underneath – it’s been painted with Gravitex paint which is slightly rubberised – this means that you can see exactly what’s what, and that there are no nasty repairs or botched restoration work.
The interior is very clean and tidy, and very original – original dash, door cards, centre console and headlining are all in good order. The original front seat covers and foams are in excellent order and have good foams. It’s nice to see a car with such an original interior – again, pointing towards it being a low-mileage, un-messed with example.
The car is, of course, tax and MOT exempt. You’ll see that the MOT history is very clean and I can’t foresee any issues that would stop the car from passing one. Paperwork-wise, there’s not a huge amount, as the car came from a deceased estate so nothing was passed over – but there are a few bills, receipts etc along with the current V5 document.
It’s rare to find a BGT at this sort of price that hasn’t been messed around with and tarted up too much. As stated, it’s most certainly not a concourse show-standard car, but it oozes history, and, in my opinion, has been done just right. I think I have priced the car very sensibly – you will struggle to find another roadgoing, usable GT for less than this! The car is ready use and enjoy, and further fettle with as you please.
