1927 Austin 12/ 4 Clifton Tourer
Reg. no. BF 7971
Chassis no. 4TT19333
Engine no. 33152L
Right from the start of production in 1921, the Austin 12/ 4 - the ‘Heavy’ 12, as it would later be known - proved an extremely well-engineered, almost impeccably reliable vehicle. These characteristics have stood it in good stead over the years, and there are still very few vintage vehicles that are easier to run and maintain, despite the fact that the oldest 12/ 4s have now passed the century mark. Sitting between the large 20 and the diminutive 7 in the Austin range, the 12 was a product of necessity - after the Great War, Austin tried to adopt a single-model policy with the 20, but this was just too large and expensive for mass-market success. Thus the 12 and 7 came along; the 12 was in many ways a scaled-down 20 and succeeded in finding an enthusiastic market both in Britain and the then-Empire. Along with the 7, the 12/ 4 helped save Austin from financial collapse and laid the groundwork for the dependable, medium-sized family cars that the company would long be known for.
This superb 1927 12/ 4 sports the ever-popular ‘Clifton’ tourer coachwork. Being a 1927 car, it also has the larger 1861cc long-stroke four-cylinder engine, that replaced the 1660cc unit in 1926. The car was exported to South Africa when new, thus spending almost all of its life in the kind dry climate there; latterly spending many years in dry storage in Durban, it was subsequently fully restored by a Mr Arthur Galway. The Clifton returned to the UK in 2014 and has since seen little use. It remains in excellent all-round condition, and comes complete with a rear passenger screen, side screens, hood and hood back, plus a rear luggage carrier. It has also been converted to coil ignition. UK registered with an age-related plate, the car comes with a current V5C, plus photographs of the car both in ‘as-found’ condition and during the body-off restoration.
Estimate: £16, 000 - 18, 000
