1996 Mazda Eunos MX5 1.8 Type II - Lovely Condition & Low Miles For Sale

I have this lovely example of a Mazda Eunos 1. 8 (MX5) Mk1 for sale and this late model Mk1 is one of the so-called 'Type II' cars. Its pretty well unmolested, not modified or messed about with and drives all the better for it.


The Type II cars (not to be confused with the Mk2...) had a few useful factory-fitted tweaks including a Torsen LSD with shorter ratios (4. 3 compared to 4. 1), extra chassis bracing underneath, an improved ECU along with a lightened flywheel. There are also minor trim differences: inside, the interior door pulls are the same as fitted to the 1. 6 models and the door speaker design is completely different. The interior light has been moved to above the rear view mirror and the indicator/ wiper stalks are the same as those fitted to the MK2 models. Outside, the 'Roadster' badge on the rear panel is finished in green rather than red. In fact there are around 20 difference between a Type II car and an earlier standard 1. 8, some important and some negligible.

This lot undoubtedly makes a Type II car nicer to drive in my opinion. The engine revs more easily and mid range acceleration is quite a bit better than a standard 1. 8.

Before I tell you more, let me tell you about Goodwood Sportscars and why should you buy from me:
I have been buying and selling Mazda MX5s for over 20 years now. While I'm a car dealer, I consider myself to be a car enthusiast above all else. I'll only sell cars that actual interest me as an enthusiast. I live, sleep and breath quick cars and have sold literally thousands of performance cars over a thirty year period. I have compete in various forms of motorsport including the Scottish Hillclimb Championship (in an MX5 of course). So I'm pretty good at spotting a good car and at making one work to the best of its ability. I've had many thousands of MX5s through my hands and know their strengths and weaknesses well.

The car here is finished in Stone Silver with black cloth seats, 15" OZ alloys fitted with a matching set of Toyo Proxes and it has only covered 65000 miles with the last keeper having owned the car for 16 years. Its definitely a superior example and drives really well.

Bodywork is very good with no rust in any of the usual places: wheel arches, sills, wings etc and paintwork is very good too with only the smallest of stonechips here and there.
Its had some minor underside repairs in the past carried out to a good standard and the car is completely solid everywhere. Even the spot welds on the inner rear wheel arches are still present and correct. The soft top is black vinyl with a plastic zip-out window and this was replaced last year.

Inside the black cloth seats are in good order as is all trim. The dashboard, door trim, carpets etc are all in good condition and everything works as it should too. Being a late Mk1, it has a Momo steering wheel complete with air bag – quite rare in an MX5 Mk1. Specification also includes electric windows and unusually, the air conditioning – which has been serviced regularly – still blows ice cold. Another unusual feature of this car is the addition of ABS braking, again something quite rare on a Mk1 model. The Kenwood stereo sounds good and has uprated speakers.

The engine feels strong and thanks to the upgrades mentioned, performance is terrific and feels usefully quicker than a standard 1. 8. The gear change and clutch are just as they should be while brakes are fine too. I’ve covered 250-300 miles in this in all conditions and its brilliant to drive. There are no odd noises or strange rattles and it still feels really tight and handles so well.

There is a small collection of receipts, service history and old MOTs and it has just been serviced again (last week) which included new filters, spark plugs and oil. Its MOT tested until July 2023. Its ready to be used and enjoyed straight away with no major expense required.

I'm based in Berwick on Tweed, near the Scottish Border and I can collect any prospective buyer from the local train station or I can arrange to have the car delivered by a trusted transport company at extra cost.
