Offered for sale if this awesome 1976 7 seater factory microbus.
I personally imported this van some 8/ 9 years ago from sunny California with a bunch of other vans and after making it work quickly I parked it up in a dry barn until last year.
I dragged it out and went through it. It’s had many new parts fitted, new brake discs, pads, callipers, all brake hoses, brake cylinder, brake shoes and hardware, new fuel injection spec fuel tank, all fuel tank breather hoses and filler pipes, all fuel hoses and clips replaced with ethanol resistant pipes, full service, all fluids replaced as well as many other parts to make this bus work!!
The bus is a rare spec 2. 0l fuel injected van, with catalytic converter that sounds amazing…. It’s a genuine vw of Canada recon unit, which was quite a common fitment in the west coast. Ihaven’t got any history with it, but it pull well, lots of smooth power and very quiet for a type 4 engine as it has hydraulic tappets. It has a 3 speed automatic gearbox that is smooth and makes driving such a fun place to be. All fluids replaced.
The bud also has a pretty cool dealer fitted air con unit above the cab and also a blower unit for the rear occupants. This is not connected up presently, but the fans all work and actually give out cool air… I have a spare air con compressor pump which I can include but it’s a very cool looking accessory…
The body on the van is very good… I have been lucky enough to own a lot of busses and have worked on literally thousands of them in the past 30 years and have seen all sorts of vans from fully restored to amazing barn finds. This bus is so solid. Underneath I have left it alone so it can be witnessed, the chassis and all underbody areas are unmolested original German steel with factory spotwelds present (I would advise underbody treatment to keep it in tip top shape for use in this country) with only very minor surface rust in a couple of areas. The bodywork is the same. Very good shape, there’s a bit of damage to the off side on the lower of the sliding door and rear wheel arch, which I have left, but treated with a product to ensure no rust gets into it. It’s a shame, but accidents happen but the main thing is it’s very solid. Minor bubbling under the windscreen, I waxed it when fitting a new windscreen seal to slow any further rust down. Doors, tailgate etc all in very good shape. Light surface rust to cab floor area but no rot.
Paint wise the lower half is all factory paint with a few sketchy blue in’s fine many years ago that simply scratch off to leave the factory paint underneath. At some time it had a terrible upper paint job done by a lunatic and got it all over the windows and seals. 3 window seals have been replaced as well as one new side window. I’ve been polishing the paint and wet flatting and gradually it’s coming off to reveal the factory pastel white below they actually innoretty good shape!!
The interior of the bus is in a good but used condition. Front seats are complete but very worn. I’ve padded them out with some old Westfalia curtains I had knocking around so I didn’t rip my shorts whilst cruising!! The rear seats are in good shape as is the headlining, one very small split…
Overall it’s a great unrestored bus. As I have said I’ve seen many busses and a lot of horror stories out there leading to very expensive resto projects… this is a great bus that is ripe for a restoration now while there’s not much work to do or a piece of history to preserve and use as is…a very versatile van being a 7 seater, all seats have seatbelts
The van is uk registered, the mot has just ran out, but would be happy to put a fresh one in it and can also help out or advise if you needed any other work doing to it.
I have done some 500+ miles in this van and you get a lot of smiles from it… it is an old van and will need maintenance but they all do. There are a couple of faults, a very small oil leak from the engine and a tiny exhaust blow but it’s still a German built vw without the rubbish aftermarket panels or rot…
Viewing by appointment at my midlands based workshop. I have a vehicle ramp and am happy for you to take a look underneath and have a test drive around our farm
