This car must be peak: Tail Fin. The 1960 Plymouth Fury Hardtop 2-door has enormous tail fins. It is a stunning and instantly recognisable American car. It is quite a sight to behold and typifies the 50s to 60s transition in car design. Whilst the tail fins are typically 50’s the car’s construction with its unibody is definitively characteristic of the 60s. Another outstanding feature is the car’s engine. It has a so-called SonoRamic intake. The idea is to produce an immediate boost of a lot of torque at low revs and keep the power going at the higher range. It worked well on the road but less so on the track, wherein first instance it had been developed for. The concept was dropped after the first year, making it quite a rarity.
The car formed part of a collection housed in a dry space. It was used regularly to keep everything moving, but never clocked up a significant amount of miles. The bodywork looks splendid. The exceptionally well-preserved panelwork aligns well. The cosmetically respray paintwork has held its lustre very well. There are the original rims shod in iconic white wall tyres. The fetching hubcaps complete the pretty picture.
The original interior is in good condition. Upfront is, according to good American tradition, an enormous front bench offering all passengers wonderful sight of the enormous bonnet through the gigantic front windscreen. Everything about this car is big. The benches have red vinyl upholstery with cloth centres. The headlining and carpets are both in a very neat state.
The 361 Cubic Inches V8 has a 3-speed automatic transmission. The engine develops enormous traction at low revs which continue unabated into the higher range thanks to the aforementioned SonoRamic intake. The 310 Ps is more than ample for the Plymouth to keep up in current traffic. The suspension of course designed for comfort and wafting its passengers forth over long distances. The brakes respond very well and are ample to bring this large coupé to a timely halt. Mechanically the car has been meticulously maintained over the years, ensuring a neat engine bay with the engine and gearbox running as they should.
The car comes with some general technical information about the model and a photo series. In short, this is a very rare 1960, Plymouth Fury. They literally don’t make them like that anymore!
