So when did you last see one of these? A rare survivor of its kind, ‘PPW 721’ is a seven-keeper example that currently displays a very modest 26, 834 miles from new, which though unwarranted is certainly credible. Finished in black and trimmed in red vinyl, the Vanguard is equipped with the optional Laycock de Normanville overdrive system that operates on both second and third gears. The vendor informs us that the Standard ‘runs well and has been in regular use’, but volunteers that ‘the paintwork would now benefit from some attention’. In summary he presently classes the interior as ‘good’, the engine, transmission and bodywork as ‘average’, and the paintwork as ‘below average’. He is now offering this seemingly very usable homegrown classic complete with its original instruction book and service manual, tow hook, original tools and a selection of spare parts.

Launched in July 1947, the Phase I Vanguard was the Standard Motor Company’s first post WWII offering – a completely fresh beetle-back design courtesy of Walter Belgrove, that bore no resemblance to previous models. The newcomer featured a conventional chassis, independent front suspension and, to optimise interior accommodation, a column-change for its three-speed transmission. Power was provided by a straight-four OHV engine of 2088cc, that was essentially the same unit as fitted to the immortal Ferguson TE20 tractor. Though little changed mechanically, the Phase II derivative of 1953 saw the saloon’s distinctive sloping rear end replaced by a more contemporary boot. Production of the comprehensive Phase II range (that also included three and five-door estate cars, a pick-up and panel van) ran for four years, during which time some 81, 074 examples were made.

In summary:
• A rare survivor that’s had just seven keepers from new
• Comes complete with optional overdrive and a tow hook
• Being sold with No Reserve
