HISTORY The Maserati 3500 GT was the car that transformed the House of the Trident from racing legend to true road car manufacturer. Presented in 1957, it was the marque's first successful grand tourer, designed to offer high performance with comfort and elegance. Built by Carrozzeria Touring using the Superleggera construction method - lightweight aluminium panels on a tubular chassis - the 3500 GT combined Italian craftsmanship with advanced engineering. Under the bonnet, Maserati adapted its tried and tested straight-six engine from the legendary 350S, perfecting it for road use. The result was a car capable of effortless high-speed travel, while retaining the refinement expected of an Italian grand tourer.
THE CAR This particular 1960 Maserati 3500 GT was delivered new on 10 September 1960 in Chiasso, Switzerland. It then spent a significant part of its life in the United States before returning to Europe in the early 2010s. This journey marked the beginning of a true love affair with its last owner, who undertook a meticulous restoration to bring the car up to its highest standards. Between 2011 and 2013, the car underwent a complete restoration by a Maserati specialist in Europe, who ensured that every element - mechanical and aesthetic - was restored to perfection. The bodywork was completely restored, with every aluminium surface carefully finished before the car was returned to its original factory colour, Smalto Grigio Metallizzato, combined with a refined black leather and beige carpeted interior. Every detail, from the interior trim to the exterior chrome, was carefully sourced and fitted correctly, ensuring an authentic finish. Mechanically, this 1960 model features the sought-after front disc brakes and a 4-speed manual gearbox, mated to the resounding 3. 5-litre (3, 484 cc) inline-six, breathing through two Weber 42 DCOE carburettors. Advanced for its time, the engine boasted an aluminium block and cylinder head with cast iron sleeves, capable of delivering an impressive 220 horsepower. To balance performance and comfort, Maserati designed a sophisticated wishbone front suspension, while the rear used a British-made Salisbury solid axle, supported by Girling brakes and Alford Alder suspension components. The engine and gearbox were restored to the same exacting standards, ensuring the car had the same performance and appearance. Not only has this extraordinary 3500 GT been restored to the highest standards, it has also proven itself in the concours world, winning Best of Show several times in the prestigious Concours d'Elegance it has entered. Adding to its desirability, the car comes with Maserati's prestigious Clasiche certification, confirming that it retains its original engine and transmission, with matching numbers. The 3500 GT, a true embodiment of Maserati's gran turismo philosophy, represents the perfect blend of performance, elegance and Italian craftsmanship: an award-winning, collectors' example of one of the Trident's most iconic road cars.
