We are delighted to present for sale this low mileage, low previous owners, ex-military, late release, high specification Defender 90, presented in Keswick Green with boost alloys and sand canvas with side windows. It is incredibly rare at HQ to get the opportunity to sell such a high specification Land Rover, especially one with such an illustrious history.
Externally, we could write a small novel with the sheer size of the spec on this Defender – from the galvanised front bumper with rubber end caps, chequer plate wing tops and bonnet for strengthening, full clear LED light set including side repeaters and “HALO” front daytime running lights, side steps, boost alloys with Insa Turbo tyres and matching spare mounted on a rear SwingAway wheel carrier, “Land Rover” classic rear mud flaps, roll over hoop, sand canvas with side windows, aluminium door tops to ward against corrosion – this Defender is fully loaded throughout. At HQ we’ve quite simply never seen what we believe to be a better looking Defender 90 than this – and we’d like to let the photos (and video) do the rest of the talking… do try not to drool too much!
On the inside, there are two outer deluxe front seats, both with interia reel seat belts, and a central cubby box with cupholders – very handy for the drive through and for keeping items out of sight if so desired. Lower door cards and deluxe matting is fitted for that premium feel, which is nice to see. This Defender 90 benefits from our Stereo & Speaker solution with integrated touch screen – this includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – this revolutionises the driving experience, and brings things up to the modern day. The rear houses 4 tip up rear seats, bringing seating for six including the driver – a roll over hoop is fitted to protect the occupants in an accident. In summary, the interior is bang up to date, super clean and just a really nice, cool place to hang out.
Out on the road, this Defender 90 really does shine – and that high specification culminates in an unrivalled drive. The low mileage 300TDI engine with Intercooler and silicon turbo hoses sounds fantastic and has all the power and grunt you might hope for with a rugged truck of this nature. Power steering mated up to a five speed gearbox, coil springs and a full set of boost alloys adds to the experience behind the wheel. This amazing Defender 90 even has modern disc brakes and so it is, in every essence, a modern 90 to drive.
So, why would you pick this Defender 90 over say, a TDCI, that was a good deal newer but perhaps with more miles? There are lots of reasons why these make much more sense, not least the road taxing situation which now forces newer Defender 90s into a ridiculously high tax band with taxing costs edging dangerously close to £1000 per year. This vehicle enjoys low road tax currently, and before too many Christmases have passed, will become tax and MOT exempt too, which will further add to the appeal of owning an older, solid Defender. Another shining feature of this early Defender 90 is that it spent almost 20 years being pampered in the forces, with 6 monthly services and dry storage when not in use – it did not have to do the school run in the winter on salty roads. We therefore find that ex-military units are in a completely different condition than a civilian vehicle of the same age. Then, there is the mileage – just 72, 500 miles from light use in the forces and only 2 civilian keepers since release in 2012. We have experience of these engines being capable of astronomical miles so you could almost regard this as just “run in”!
Perhaps the greatest motivation to avoid a TD5 or TDCI say is the fact that it is widely known that the 300TDI engine was the best and most reliable unit ever produced. There are no ECUs, or fiddly sensors that can (and do) go wrong. This is an entirely mechanical vehicle, which could be maintained with minimal tools on a desert island – that is despite the “mod cons” such as CarPlay, Android Auto, High Back Seats, Power Steering and all the other items listed above. If you couple all these facts together, it is then possible to appreciate why there is a growing following for trucks like this.
In summary then, if you are looking for a classic, original Defender 90 (we have to call this shape classic now, just because they are over 25 years old & the most recent shape is now the current Defender!) then this is certainly one to consider. When coupling in the general condition, history, mileage, specification, ownership and running costs, then we think this makes a tempting package. It would be ideal for as a family fun truck, year round, whether travelling to the beach in the summer, or getting up the side of a mountain in the snow. If looked after, it could be kept for many years as an old “family friend”… we know this because we have a truck just the same at HQ, in similar spec, and we would never part with her!
