• Over 20 years with the present owner

• 2nd in class at the 2013 Dolomite Classic Rally

From the start of the 1984 model year, Porsche revived the evocative Carrera name for all 911 variants, co-incidentally with the introduction of the 3. 2-litre engine. Although it remained an air-cooled 'flat six', the '3. 2' was 80% new and incorporated an effective cam chain tensioner and associated lubrication system that at last addressed a perennial 911 shortcoming, including a long overdue upgrade to the earlier 915 transmission. An ECU controlled the fuel and ignition systems for the first time on a 911, enabling the engine to be both more powerful and less thirsty. As a result, this enlarged and extensively revised power plant now produced 231bhp, 27 horsepower up on its predecessor, endowing the Carrera with a level of performance approaching that of the original 911 Turbo of 1974, the bald statistics being a 0-60mph time of 5. 3 seconds and a top speed of 152mph, with 100mph reachable in a breathtaking 13. 6 seconds. Forty-plus years on, the Carrera 3. 2 is now highly sought after and for very good reason, though finding one is not that easy.

A final-year G-Series 911, this example is a C16 UK-supplied car, finished in its factory original Grand Prix White (L908) with a black leather interior (LT). Being a 1989 example, it does of course feature the desirable Getrag G50 5-speed gearbox and 16" Fuchs, rather than the standard 15" wheels as offered on previous models. Other important factory options include front and rear spoilers (473); sport shock absorbers (474); Blaupunkt Radio/ cassette (330) and an electric sunroof (650).

This is the vendor's second Carrera 3. 2 (his first was new in 1987) and has belonged to him for over 20 happy years. Initially he used the Porsche as a daily driver, which accounts for most of the mileage (just over 97, 000), but more recently the car has been stored in the vendor's garage. It has been typically taken out on occasion for annual MoT testing and servicing, which thanks to its simplicity, was undertaken by the vendor.

In December 2021 the Porsche was restored following an earlier engine top-end rebuild by specialists JZM, that included new genuine Porsche front wings; inner/ outer sills; kidney bowls; door posts; and light shells. The car in recent times been mechanically maintained by Jaz Porsche of St Albans, receiving new silencers; starter motor; distributor cap and pretty much anything else it needed. Redone only a few years ago, the paintwork still looks fresh, while the interior is described by the vendor as 'pretty impressive for 36 years old'.

In 2013 the Porsche was unexpectedly substituted for the vendor's usual rally car for the gruelling Dolomite Classic Rally. Heavily penalised for being a post-1983 car, but with legendary Works navigator Willy Cave on board, the Carrera achieved a shock result of 2nd in class against a field of very well driven European 911s.

This recently restored and very well cared for and hard to find wide-wheel Sport Coupe Carrera 3. 2 comes with its original instruction manuals; a V5C document; current MoT certificate; and a comprehensive history file of restoration and servicing bills; expired MoTs; and sundry invoices.

With the 3. 2 emergent as the go-to for conversion houses building retrospective 2. 7 RS replicas, the opportunity to acquire an original specification example represents an increasingly rare opportunity.

All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
