1950 Vauxhall Velox LIP - com matrícula transferível 'EDY 282' - ARRANCA, CORRE E FUNCIONA
The 1950 Vauxhall Velox LIP is an early post-war British flagship saloon known for its distinct transatlantic styling and smooth performance. Manufactured by Vauxhall (a General Motors subsidiary) at their Luton plant, the 'LIP' code refers strictly to the L-Type generation of the Velox produced between 1948 and 1951.
Engine: 2, 275 cc (2. 3L) inline-six, overhead valve (OHV) 'Sixlight'.
Power Output: Around 54 brake horsepower (bhp) with strong low-end torque.
Transmission: 3-speed manual column shift ('three-on-the-tree').
Suspension & Brakes: Independent 'knee-action' torsion bar front suspension, leaf-sprung rear axle, and hydraulic brakes.
Performance: A top speed of roughly 74–77 mph, with a relaxed cruising sweet spot at 60 mph.
Design & Market Context
The LIP shared its four-door body shell with the lesser, four-cylinder Vauxhall Wyvern. However, the premium Velox distinguished itself using fluted chrome lines down the bonnet sides, a higher-quality interior featuring broad bench seating finished in red leather, a rear seat central armrest, and generous glass windows.
Because it offered an American-influenced aesthetic mixed with British proportions, it competed directly with vehicles like the six-cylinder Ford Zephyr. Though highly practical and surprisingly fast for its time, it sat in a unique class niche between everyday fleet vehicles and prestigious executive marques like Rover or Wolseley.
The early L-Type Velox LIP saloons are exceptionally rare sights, with historical registry data suggesting only around a dozen or so remain legally on the road in the UK. They have become highly sought-after, niche post-war collector items.
This example is extremely well presented and solid solid throughout. The interior is fully original and well upholstered to both seat seats and carpets. Showing just 43385 miles, it was last on the road in 2020 but has been regularly started and moved every year subsequently. In private ownership for the past 13 years, the vehicle comes with an extensive history file, old tax disc, MOT and invoices including a comprehensive brake rebuild in 2017 and new tyresin 2020. Whilst some light we commissioning will be in order, it would not take much to get this vehicle back to 'daily drive' status. It is thought that less than a dozen Vauxhall Velox remain in the UK so this is a very rare example of the marque and whilst literally in the back of a barn, this vehicle will present very well once out in the daylight and with a good clean and polish.
